Italy has slowly opened up its restaurans and stores, so we decided to take a nice driving tour of the Amalfi Coast. ๐น๐ ๐ ๐ โ๐๐ง๐๐๐จ| ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐๐จ๐จ๐ง by Zora Neale Hurston
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
๐ฆ๐๐ป๐ผ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐: "In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston went to Plateau, Alabama, just outside Mobile, to interview eighty-six-year-old Cudjo Lewis. Of the millions of men, women, and children transported from Africa to America as slaves, Cudjo was then the only person alive to tell the story of this integral part of the nation's history. Hurston was there to record Cudjo's firsthand account of the raid that led to his capture and bo***ge fifty years after the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in the United States."
Barracoon is, like most non-fiction, not an enjoyable read. This was not a book that made me excited to read it. However, it is such an important topic that it needs to be read.
There were moments when Hurston and Cudjo would interact that made me chuckle, but Cudjo's story was so heartbreaking that those moments were almost forgotten immediately. I found an audiobook version on that really helped since Hurston wrote everything the way Cudjo would say it, so while some words could be hard to mentally imagine, the audiobook brought life into Cudjo's story.
I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in continuing to learn about American history.

Romantic comedies are relatively new for me. I started reading them at the height of our lockdown last year and found that I really enjoyed them. Sometimes you just really need a break from heavy books!
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐น is a very cute, very quick read. When Nikole Petersen is proposed to by her very new boyfriend in a very public place (hello Dodger's Stadium!), she is rescued by handsome doctor Carlos Ibarra. Of course, romance and comedy follows! I found the two characters to be relatable and realistic. They both have issues they need to work through (it wouldn't be a rom com if they didn't!).
Overall, I gave this โญโญโญโญ/5.

๐
๐ฎ๐ง ๐
๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ:
1. Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to ever run the Boston Marathon in 1967
2. Fatima al-Fihri was an Arab Muslim woman who is credited with founding the University of Al-Quaraouiyine in Morocco in 859 CE (and it's still operating today!).
3. Jeanne de Clisson was married to an English nobleman who was imprisoned and beheaded as a result of the proxy wars between England and France. For revenge, she turned into a pirate and would behead every French nobleman she captured.
4. Khutulun was the great-great-granddaughter of legendary conqueror Genghis Khan. For her marriage, she proposed a challenge: any man that could best her in a wrestling match would have the honor of taking her hand in marriage. If they lost, they would have to give her a horse. Legend says Khutulun won over 10,000 horses.
5. The Night Witches, the Russian all-female 588th Night Bomber Regiment dropped more than 23,000 tons of bombs on N**i targets. And in doing so, they became a crucial Soviet asset in winning World War II. The Germans nicknamed them the Nachthexen, or โnight witches,โ because the whooshing noise their wooden planes made resembled that of a sweeping broom.

The fantasy genre will always have a place in my heart. Fantasy is the ultimate escapism for me, but I haven't really read much in the past few months. Fantasy often comes in series now, and I just hate waiting for the series to end! Most series I've read have had anti-climactic endings that I didn't enjoy, so I've just been turned off of books longer than trilogies. However, these are a few of my favorites!

I received this copy of ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ by Eman Quotah for my February Book Drop pick. From Goodreads:
"During a snowy Cleveland February, newlywed university students Muneer and Saeedah are expecting their first child, and he is harboring a secret: the word divorce is whispering in his ear. Soon, their marriage will end, and Muneer will return to Saudi Arabia, while Saeedah remains in Cleveland with their daughter, Hanadi. Consumed by a growing fear of losing her daughter, Saeedah disappears with the little girl, leaving Muneer to desperately search for his daughter for years. The repercussions of the abduction ripple outward, not only changing the lives of Hanadi and her parents, but also their interwoven family and friendsโthose who must choose sides and hide their own deeply guarded secrets.
And when Hanadi comes of age, she finds herself at the center of this conflict, torn between the world she grew up in and a family across the ocean. How can she exist between parents, between countries?"

Since it's Black History Month in the United States, I wanted to do my part and read books by Black authors. My third ook of the month was James Baldwin's ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ญ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ค. There is absolutely no question why Baldwin is one of the most talked about authors of his time: his way with words never fails to amaze me. The story of Tish and Fonny is a heartbreaking story, and one unfortunately well known in the United States. Fonny is falsely accused of a crime he did not commit, but being a black man in the 1970s, he's at the mercy of the people in power, specifically the white cop who had been harassing them both.
Sometimes the books we read aren't "enjoyable," but they have important messages that need to be shared and so we read them. This is one of those books. I enjoyed the writing, and there were moments of dialogue that had me literally laughing out loud. In the end, I feel like this is a book that is best enjoyed in a setting that allows for lots of questions and discussions.
Have you read or listened to any works by James Baldwin?

Jesmyn Ward is becoming one of my favorite authors. I didn't realize ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ป๐ด, ๐จ๐ป๐ฏ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฑ, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ป๐ด was part of a series when I read it, but I immediately bought the other two in the Bois Sauvage sereis, ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐ and ๐ช๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐.
Books like these, deep, thoughtful, and full of pain, aren't books I'd say I "enjoy," but appreciate. I appreciate being able to read the experiences and points of view of people and events I otherwise wouldn't be able to. Told from the POV of Esch, the only girl in a family full of men, we follow her and her brothers as they navigate life a few weeks before Hurricane Katrina hits their town.
These are not light-hearted reads, and I think that's why it takes me so long to finish them. It isn't because they aren't great books; it's just that I need time away from the harsh reality of the subjects sometimes.
Have you read any Jesmyn Ward books?
