CARE BLOSSOMS STUDIO blossomed in March 2008 when our mother and grandmother, Mary Beth Miller was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Professionally, Mary Beth was a Horticultural Therapist. Horticultural Therapists are professionals trained to facilitate a connection between people and plants to achieve therapeutic and wellness goals. In addition to her professional work, Mary Beth was also a caregiver. Since 2000 she had been the caregiver for both of her parents until their passing.
Mary Beth's cancer treatments were going to require chemo treatments, radiation, surgery and physical therapy. Her first chemo treatment required an inpatient stay in the hospital. Here she was not allowed to have fresh or even dried flowers in her room.
The experience got her thinking about new ways to connect with nature. But the nagging question that stuck with her, as the chemo fog swirled in her brain was, If she couldn’t practice horticultural therapy like she used to, how could she continue to connect people and plants together for therapeutic benefits?
From her work, she was keenly aware of the healing power of plants and nature. She was aware that when life gets challenging, nature can encourage, soothe, energize, educate and inspire. She wanted to be sure that no matter what, that she would continue to stay connected with her garden and nature. It was during this time that Care Blossoms Studio bloomed. More determined than ever to keep that connection, she enlisted the help of her granddaughter, Liz. She saw this as an opportunity to help Liz with several learning issues that she faced using her garden and Care Blossoms as a vocational therapeutic horticultural project.
As Mary Beth's health started to take a sharp decline in May 2010, I moved into the role of a direct caregiver, mom’s caregiver. Along with Liz and others, we cared for her until her passing in August 2010.
Liz and I were left with Care Blossoms. I had not been involved with Care Blossoms. I always looked at the business as “Mom and Liz’s thing.”
Soon though, I found my self desperate to stay connected to Mom and to continue her mission of connecting people to nature. Liz too, wanted to continue the business and was going to need assistance with this.
So here we are. What began as a business between grandmother and granddaughter continues between Mother and Daughter.
