Many thanks to Dr. Andrew Hammond, Historian and Curator for the International Spy Museum in Washington DC, for inviting me to join him in conversation on the Museum’s Spycast podcast.

My Global Career as a Female FBI Agent” – with Kathy Stearman Beijing. New Delhi. Kathmandu. “Hang on, I thought the title said FBI, not CIA?” Well, it did. Kathy Stearman was an FBI Legat who lived and worked in all of those capital cities. “Well, I’ve heard of the Ambassador and the Station Chief, but not the Legat?” Well, that’s why you need to ...

Amy McGrath and Kathy Stearman - Kentucky Book Festival 01/03/2022

On this, the First Day of Women’s History Month, I would like to honor all the women in the Ukraine who standing up to fight for their country against the invading Russians.

I would also like to honor a woman who was a “first” in what she did, Amy McGrath, the first woman to fly in a combat mission for the Marine Corps, and the first woman to fly an F/A-18 fight jet in combat.

I had the opportunity to ask Amy what that experience was really like at the Kentucky Book Festival, where we had a conversation in front of a live audience. If you missed it, check it out via the link below.

Amy has now stepped out of the cockpit and is helping other women run for political office in their communities, their cities, their states, and on the federal level. If you’re interested in running for office, reach out to Amy via her foundation at honorboundamericans.com.

Thank you, Amy, for your service to our country!

Please join me on Saturday, November 6th, at the 2021 Kentucky Book Festival, Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington, Kentucky, 10:30 am-11:15 am EST.

Amy McGrath and I will be joining forces to discuss our books, “Honor Bound” and “It’s Not About the Gun,” and what it’s like to be two kick-ass Kentucky women!

I’m just going to say this ahead of time…an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet is WAY cooler than a gun…ANY gun!

Hope to see you there!

Yum! One of my favorites from India!

Kathy Stearman recounts the global experiences that shaped her life during her twenty-six years as a Special Agent with the FBI,—and the mixed feelings that she now holds about the sacrifices she had to make to survive in a man’s world in IT'S NOT ABOUT THE GUN: Lessons from My Global Career as a Female FBI Agent.

Book Club Menu: Saag Paneer
“When I worked in India and China, I was fortunate to sample a variety of cuisines from south-central and east Asia. Saag Paneer was one of my absolute favorite dishes from India, is from the well-known cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey. I collected several of her cookbooks when I was in India."

This is what the LA Talk Radio Writer's Block hosts Christina and Jean Bell had to say when they interviewed me about my book, "It's Not About the Gun."

Thanks Jim and Bobbi Jean, I had so much fun!

"Our visit with new writer, retired FBI Agent, Kathy Stearman last evening was a lot of fun. Not only is she a class act, but willing to chat about everything. Obviously fun loving and sharp as a tack, Kathy is a guest's guest when it comes to live radio! Give a list right here!"

This was one of my favorite things as a little girl because I got to make it with my mom. Enjoy the turnovers and the book!

After more than twenty-six years as a Special Agent with the FBI, Kathy Stearman recounts the global experiences that shaped her life—and the mixed feelings that she now holds about the sacrifices she had to make to survive in a man’s world in IT'S NOT ABOUT THE GUN: Lessons from My Global Career as a Female FBI Agent.

Book Club Menu: Strawberry jam turnovers:
“My mom's thick, work-worn hands kneaded the dough, not with a tenderness, oblivious to the silky texture of flour melting into the buttery dough. Her movements were brisk and hurried, impatient for the ingredients so submit to the insistent will of he fingers…Satisfied with her results, she used a table knife to dot pats of ice-cold butter on the now flat circles of dough, followed by spoons full of homemade strawberry jam…In these moments, she found the patience to teach me, to hold something creative in her hands and show me that I, too, could create something beautiful."

“Stearman starts with a recounting of a horrific act of terrorism in Sri Lanka and then looks back to her youth…A bibliophile from the time she could read, she longed for escape from the family farm and found that and more through her federal job. Stearman’s story will engross readers.” -

Jerri William's interview with Kathy on Jerri’s widely-renowned podcast, Retired Case File Review, has been downloaded over 20,000 times. Their discussion about being a female FBI agent was so popular, Jerri decided to hold a separate Zoom event, which I am calling the “Unplugged” version of the podcast.

Jerri invited other former female FBI agents to chime in on the discussion, along with a couple of former male FBI agents. You’ll get to hear a very candid and transparent conversation about being a woman working in a man’s world. You’ll also get to hear questions the audience asked Kathy, Jerri, and the other agents.

I think you’ll enjoy it!

I'm looking forward to reading Kathy Stearman's memoir, It's Not About the Gun. Thank you, ( ), for this complimentary copy. . .
About the book: When former FBI Agent Kathy Stearman read in the New York Times that sixteen women were suing the FBI for discrimination at the training academy, she was surprised to see the women come forward—no one ever had before. But the truth behind their accusations resonated.

After a twenty-six-year career in the Bureau, Kathy Stearman knows from personal experience that this type of behavior has been prevalent for decades. Stearman’s It’s Not About the Gun examines the influence of attitude and gender in her journey to becoming FBI Legal Attaché, the most senior FBI representative in a foreign office.

When she entered the FBI Academy in 1987, Stearman was one of about 600 women in a force of 10,000 agents. While there, she evolved into an assertive woman, working her way up the ranks and across the globe to hold positions that very few women have held before. And yet, even at the height of her career, Stearman had to check herself to make sure that she never appeared weak, inferior, or afraid. The accepted attitude for women in power has long been cool, calm, and in control—and sometimes that means coming across as cold and emotionless.

Stearman changed for the FBI, but she longs for a different path for future women of the Bureau. If the system changes, then women can remain constant, valuing their female identity and nurturing the people they truly are. In It's Not About the Gun, Stearman describes how she was viewed as a woman and an American overseas, and how her perception of her country and the FBI, observed from the optics of distance, has evolved. . .
