I am an above elbow amputee air rifle shooter (and the occasional shotgun too).
At last my new grip has arrived and been fitted to rifle. Now I can fine tweak things 🤩
Thanks to Rice-N-Spice proprietor Khaled Miah for this 🦾
Received my gold medal from the DSGB Club National competition in October in the R5 prone event at todays training
12 targets, each with 5 pellets through. At least some of them are going through in the same place 😎
Today I spent the day at Go Sport Shooting Centre in Carmarthen getting used to my new rifle.
It was also “take your sponsor to the range day” so I was joined by Khaled Miah, proprietor of Rice And Spice, Ystradgynlais and my partner Kev Hughes.
Khaled had a go at some rifle shooting and thoroughly enjoyed his time there. He was impressed with how I was getting on and looks forward to the next time he can come along.
After Khaled had left, myself and Kev spent some time tweaking a few bits on my rifle, although until the new grip arrives we haven’t gone overboard.
A huge thanks to Geraint of Go Sport for allowing me to spend time there to sort my rifle.
Next year is already looking like it’s going to be pretty busy for me.
Already got three, possibly four competitions lined up in the first five months, and that’s just for my 10m shooting! The 25m Benchrest season will kick off around March time, so I’ll have to choose carefully where I need to be.
Starting next year, 10m will take precedence over other ventures.
Not too disappointed with these first cards.
A few a little off to the right but once we realised which way the rear sight needed to be adjusted (not all sights work the same) we were able to get things back on track.
So, good things to look forward to and eager to get a left handed grip to make things even better
New, to me, gun day today 🤩, I picked up a Feinwerkbau 700 this evening.
Excited to try this out but won’t be properly set up until I can change the grip from right to left handed, however everything else can be manipulated to fit.
I’ve been fettling a little but will spend tomorrow evening getting things “just right””
This rifle is to help me progress as I, and my coaches, feel that I have reached the limit of my current rifle, one that has done far better than we thought it would, and so I need something I can grow with
4th and final day of competition result… another silver medal 🤩
What a great four days, not just because of how I’ve done but because I’ve made new friends, received some really useful advice and enjoyed the whole experience.
I’d like to thank everyone for their support both at the event and messages of encouragement on here. 🥰🦾
Day 3 result…
Silver medal for me today in the SH2 R4 standing event.
Again, another good day of shooting by everyone and lots of advice and sharing what works for people. Looking forward to tomorrow, the last day of competition
Just want to thank Mick Kirby for helping out yesterday and today while being my loader for the competition. Much appreciated 😊
Another 4th today and another competition personal best.
The guys in the medals really are opening my eyes to where I need to be, but considering I’ve only been shooting precision seriously since April this year, I’m not too discouraged.
Onwards and upwards for tomorrow’s event
Todays result… 4th
Only 3 points off 3rd so I’m happy with that and I know what I need to do tomorrow.
The whole thing is an experience and there is so much to learn but it’s good to know there are so many people who are happy to help with advice or carrying equipment.
With the people I’ve met so far, there’s no way I could be too upset with todays result.
Tomorrow is another day 🦾😊
Today’s the day!
Well, day one of four anyway.
Going to be taking part in the Welsh Airgun Championship over the next four days in Cardiff. It’s my biggest competition so far but looking forward to the experience.
Updates to follow 🦾😉
From tonight’s practice session. Not a pb, but not far off it and I’m particularly happy with a few of the groupings
Ok, so a few things to update on.
1. AirAbility & BRUK 25m benchrest weekend in Derby. It was great being a part of the AirAbility team giving people who had only a limited experience of benchrest or no experience at all a chance to have a go on the rookie day. I was also taking part in the BRUK event and although not a good weekend, a better personal performance than my last time at that particular range.
2. Club Nationals at Stoke Mandeville, a 10m precision competition where I was shooting in the R4 standing and R5 prone events. In the R4 event I produced a competition personal best and was placed 4th and in the R5 event I won gold, beating the silver placed athlete by 0.1 of a point.
3. WAA training weekend in Hereford where I wore a shooting jacket for the first time. Day 1 I trained in the R4 standing discipline and produced four personal bests throughout the day. Day 2 I concentrated on the R5 prone discipline and produced two personal bests from the two cards I shot. There was also a short match and final between all the athletes from the weekend, so I competed as R4 so everyone was doing a standing shoot. I finished in 3rd place from the eleven athletes who took part, me being the only disabled athlete.
A thanks to all the WAA trainers but a special thank you to Mr Terry Doe who took time out of his busy schedule to spend a few hours getting my head in the right place
Getting there. 60 shots
A good feel to tonight’s training, after a busy couple of weekends (updates to follow).
12 cards with 5 pellets each, all shown here in a TargetScan app screenshot.
This was done standing as per the R4 discipline.
Still some work to do but happy I’m going in the right direction.
As well as shooting at normal targets, training consists of different exercises to hone the skills. The targets are shot in a random order, just shoot as required to the next one on the pile.
Each target had 5 shots through it.
A good day spent with the coaches from the WAA (Welsh Airgun Association) on Sunday.
I did the equivalent of 3 matches (180 shots) in the R5 discipline (prone) and scored a personal best on each one. The best of the PBs was 606.2, so still a bit to go but I’ve broken the 600 point barrier.
I’m getting there
While photos were being taken, I managed to get a 10.9, the highest score to get. It means I got the centre of the bullseye, so the person taking the pics took a pic of the screen before I took my next shot
Various pictures of my 10m training
So today I received my NSRA dispensation certificate which allows me to use certain equipment and shooting positions to take part in regular, non disabled specific events at 10m.
This greatly increases the amount of events that are available to me until I can get officially classified as an SH2 athlete which opens up even more competitions and experiences.
On the way home from a fantastic day’s training with the Welsh Airgun Association coaches.
Lots of changes to gun and position (I was shooting 10m prone, R5, today), and lots to learn, but finished off the day with 10 of us shooting in a final with me being the only disabled athlete taking part.
Leading the final from the start, a lower scoring shot meant a shoot off between myself and one other. 0.3 was all that separated 1st from 2nd.
Just signed up for the Welsh Airgun Championships 2023 in November.
Four days of competition
Two disciplines
One arm 🦾
A few pictures from this weekend.
Some pictures of me and my TS400 indoors then some of me and my Pro Target outdoors
I have a request. Those that know me will be aware that I'm not good at asking for help, but sometimes I need to bite the bullet and put my independence to one side.
I am hoping to compete in a disabled shooting event in Cardiff in November. Because of my circumstances, I am allowed to have someone load my rifle for me. Usually, this would be Kev however for this particular event he is unavailable, so I need to put my request out wider.
Due to the official nature of the event, the person who is my loader needs to be included as my support to allow them access to the firing point, and as such will need to have their name included in the ticket application process. There is no cost to the loader.
Also because of the nature of the event, I need whoever is prepared to load, to accept the rules as they pertain to them. I am happy to explain if someone asks. Basically, I need a sensible adult.
So, if you are available 2nd to 5th November (inclusive) and are willing and able to be in Cardiff, please could you get in touch as soon as possible. I will give further details to anyone who is serious about helping.
Thanks in advance
I had a busy weekend, taking part in the GTSC Open Benchrest competition at Glevum. This was the first time I have competed in the same competition as my partner and the weekend was his, this time, as he was better at judging the wind than I was.
On the plus side, I picked up a new to me rifle, Air Arms Pro Target, which I used on the second day of the competition and improved on the previous day’s results. And I didn’t come last, so always a bonus 🤩
Last night was training night again for my 10m stuff, concentrating mainly on the R4 standing discipline, and happy with how things are going.
10𝓶 𝓡4 𝓹𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮
A good night at training tonight. My grouping is improving and that equals my scores getting higher.
Still a way to go, but I’m heading in the right direction.
Another day, another discipline, another gold.
Day one, discipline one done and I’m happy to say that I’ve come away with gold.
Really good day, spoken with lots of other athletes and learnt a lot. Roll on tomorrow when I do my second discipline
On my way for today’s free practice before this weekend’s Welsh Shooting Para Sport Open 2023 in Swansea.
Let’s hope my mojo arrives in time 🤩
New arrival today, looking forward to trying this out on my TS400 🦾
So this is my 10m standing set up… Air Arms TS400 and a Belgian spring rest.
I’ll be using this set up at the ParaSport Festival in Swansea in July for the SH2 standing event. I’ll also be using this equipment in a slightly different set up for the SH2 prone shooting event in July.
A good morning spent shooting today getting used to the Belgian spring rest ready for Julys Parasport Festival.
It’s a good feeling having my own equipment, being able to adjust and fiddle as needed to get it just right.
Still a bit of work to do, but there always will be. Always ways to improve.
Just signed up for my first official 10m shooting competition.
Tickets got for myself and Kev (who'll be my loader for the event).
Super excited as I'm entering two disciplines, standing and prone, so will be interesting to see how I do at both.
Prone for disabled shooters is done in a seated position, something I've not done before (but hey, first time for everything, right?) but I'm interested in learning and speaking to others about the sport, and where I can go from here 😃
Not quite sure what to expect, but that's why I'm going... to find out. 🦾🤩
