Today we honor the Navajo Code Talkers, heroes whose bravery and ingenuity helped turn the tide of World War II.
80 years ago, the first 29 Navajo Code Talkers created an unbreakable code that confounded the enemy. Their legacy of service and sacrifice continues to inspire us today. Their story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to their country. Their contributions to American history will never be forgotten.

I hope you all are enjoying the first week of Spring 💐🪻🌸🌼.
As we all know April starts this Monday with April fools day. A day full of jokes 😁and pranks 😄, so be on the lookout 👀. But, many of us might not know that April is also the National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). It a month dedicated to draw attention to the prevalence of sexual assault and educate individuals and communities about how to prevent it. This year’s theme is “Building Connected Communities.”

Building Connected Communities helps us reduce the likelihood of sexual abuse, assault, and harassment in our communities. We are all a part of a community and being part of a community creates a sense of belonging and reminds us of how our beliefs, choices, and actions affect one another. Racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, and other forms of oppression contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. We must address all abuses of power to prevent sexual violence in our relationships, communities, and society (nsvrc.org).

Our Voices Have Power. Together, We Can Build Safe and Respectful Communities.

With this in perspective we can expand our vision from individual needs to community needs. It is up to us as community members to eliminate and reduce sexual assaults in our communities. It is a sensitive subject that many of us do not like to discuss. It can be uncomfortable and triggering, but it is an important discussion to have. One uncomfortable discussion will help us take one step forward in the prevention efforts against sexual assaults.

UNHS has collaborated with local organizations to provide events to spread the awareness and prevention of sexual assaults through community 5k walk/runs, self-defense classes and more. Attached are the schedules for the 5k Walk/Run and self defense classes. There are other activities being planned and will be shared once they are confirmed. We hope to see you all soon!

Thank you!

Don't miss out on this inspiring event featuring renowned mural artist, motivational speaker, and Monument Valley native Orlando Begay!
Join us for the IBP "Healing Your Own Way" tour, where Orlando will share his story and message of self-care and self-love.
Special Guest:
Orlando Begay (a.k.a. O.B.), is a member of the Navajo Nation and a renowned artist. Born into a family of traditional artisans, Orlando's artistic journey began in his early elementary school days. Despite facing challenges, Orlando's passion for art persevered, and he has since become a successful muralist, motivational speaker, and advocate for his community.
Through his work, Orlando aims to raise awareness about contemporary Native American issues, promote healthy lifestyles, and create a positive impact on his communities.
During his attendance at Haskell Indian Nations University, orlando accepted an offer to intern for Ryan Red Corn at Buffalo Nickel Press for a summer. There at Buffalo Nickel Press, orlando learned screen printing, professionalism, and graphic design. After, orlando experimented with custom shoe art (OB Ones custom shoes), which was well-received by the public, and helped O.B. to learn the business side of art. Now, O.B. enjoys working on design work that brings awareness to contemporary Native American issues, healthy events, or anything that can have a positive impact on our communities.
