Amongst all of the emblematic animals of the French Pyrénées, one of them is probably the most fabulous symbol of wildlife: the bear. Loved or hated, admired or feared, its history in the Pyrénées has been tied with that of humans for 250 000 years.
In France, the debate about its reintroduction in the mountain chain has always been very heated. A coexistence with bears is possible and there is no doubt about the crucial role they play in biodiversity!
🐻 Indu, the bear on the photo, was born in 2016 and is an icon at the . What is amazing about this park is they support the reintroduction of bears in the Pyrénées (along with many other wildlife conservation projects) and have already donated 21 000+ euros to the cause.
🐻 Go to this link if you would like to adopt Indu and help protect bears!

🐻 In 1992, there were 8 to 10 bears left in France. A release of 8 individuals raised population numbers to 43 bears in 2017. It has been estimated that 50 individuals are necessary for the species to be viable in the French Pyrénées, so the challenge remains.
Stay wild friends 😉

On a blazing hot summer day in the African bush, my heart stopped as we spotted the first leopard I ever saw, having a siesta in the shade.

Any chance your plans for the weekend look a bit like this? 😁
Raccoons are endemic to North and Central America but can also be found in Europe and Japan thanks to humans... They were exported to Europe in the 1920's to stock fur farms, and to Japan in the 1970's to satisfy children's demand for pet raccoons after the success of the anime cartoon "Rascal the Raccoon".
However, raccoons are considered an invasive species and do not make for happy or safe pets!!
As for their conservation status, the subspecies "Pygmy Raccoon" from the Cozumel Island in Mexico is critically endangered, with only 250 individuals left in the wild.
Have an adventure filled weekend friends! 😍

I just got back from 10 days in Corsica to meet with wildlife conservation activists and shoot a film on what they're doing to protect the Tavignanu river (coming soon).
⠀
Climbed a few mountains along the way since nothing makes me happier.. 🥰
⠀.And I was thinking. Isn't it crazy the opportunities that arise once you set your mind on a goal you are truly passionate about? I mean, if I hadn't taken the first step in this crazy entreprise, my friend wouldn't have invited me to the Island of Beauty, I wouldn't have made new friends along the way, jumped in crystal clear rivers, kayaked amongst turtles or played volleyball on the beach at sunset.
⠀
So whatever you've been delaying... I encourage you to try.. Even if it doesn't work out, we'll have no regrets and a heart full of memories. ✌🏼

Did you know? 🐺

The wolf (or Canis Lupus) is the first animal to have been domesticated by mankind at least 33 000 years ago. It is the ancestor of the 350 species of dogs (or Canis lupus familiaris) that live today.
⠀
The wolf on the picture is another resident at the Coat Fur Refuge in Bretagne, France. Along with 11 other wolves and several big cats, he was confiscated from a man who tried to use him in acts for his public show without authorization.
⠀

Having been eradicated from France in the 1930s due to human activity, the wolf made its comeback around the year 2000 by crossing the Alps from Italy. Today, there are approximately 580 wolves in France.
⠀
W***y Bigot learned about the wolves that are used for cinema / shows / animal parks / illegal private ownership and who suffer from trauma or behavioural problems. They are often either euthanised or put in cages for the remainder of their lives.
⠀
In 2006, W***y created the Coat Fur Refuge in Lescouët-Gouarec to rescue these damaged wolves and give them a second chance at life.
⠀
Today, 16 wolves live in packs at the refuge in a beautiful forest at the heart of Bretagne (France). 🌲
⠀
They need our help to be able to continue caring for the animals. Please like, comment & share! Pay them a visit at the refuge or visit their website to donate @ http://refugedesloups.org/nous-soutenir/ 💞
⠀
Here is a translation of what W***y is saying in the video:
⠀
🐺 The wolf, like all predators, is a key component of the ecosystem. It regulates herbivore populations, which in turn protects flora, birds, insects... Creating a perfect equilibrium.
🐺 It is a misconception to think that there are too many wolves in France. The wolf adapts its frequency of reproduction depending on the availability of habitat and prey. In France, wolf packs are only composed of 5-7 individuals, compared to 20-30 wolves per pack in North America or Russia.
🐺 Shooting down wolves to protect cattle only makes matters worst. Wolves have hunting methods adapted to the number of individuals in the pack. When an individual is shot down, it takes time for them to readapt their hunting techniques. In the meantime, they will go for the easiest kill - sheep.
🐺 To protect the wolf, we need to be mindful of nature in general. We also need to protect the wolf at governmental level and to work hand in hand with shepherds.

Have you ever wondered about your purpose here on Earth?⠀
⠀⠀
I’ve been asking myself this question for years. Until I recently realized, I’ve known since I was 10 YO - I’d just forgotten. I am here to shine light on the issue that matters most to me: wildlife conservation.⠀
⠀⠀
So I’m launching a project – that I am SO excited about! – to meet with wildlife conservation organizations around the world and document how they are saving animals from harm and extinction.⠀
⠀⠀
Bringing you the protectors of our planet, right here on this page. So that we may learn about the cause they are fighting for and how we can help / visit them and their animals 😍 I really hope you’ll come with me on this journey!!⠀
⠀⠀
First up: The Coat Fur Refuge in Bretagne, France, and their 16 rescued wolves (the beauty on the picture above is one of them). I’ll be dropping a video about my visit there shortly, so follow me to stay tuned! 🐺 .dethoisy on Instagram!
