Apologies for the delay in posting, have been having a few days off after a whirlwind week. But I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected as Vice President Welfare for Queen Mary Students’ Union for 2020/21!
Thank you to everyone who voted and to all of my friends who supported me during the election campaign. Congratulations to all the other candidates, I’m looking forward to working with you all. Special mention to Demi and Sameyia for being such amazing candidates - you are both so talented, so passionate and so qualified, I know you’ll absolutely smash whatever fantastic journey you begin next.
Roll on 1st August 2020 when me and the other new executive officers take office! Can’t wait to work with such an incredible team and create real change for students at Queen Mary x
Having been at Queen Mary for almost 5 Years, I have had some amazing experiences through the roles I have held within QMSU Last year, I had the amazing job of organising the annual Rites of Passage Ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral through my role as Vice President Barts where I spoke to an audience of 2000 people. Experiences such as this one have given me so much more confidence, and I promise that as YOUR VP Welfare I would never be afraid to argue the view of students in meetings with senior university management.
I am ready, I am qualified, I am here for you. For your union, for your welfare.

It's no secret that being at university can be expensive, and that's particularly true in a city like London. As YOUR VP Welfare, I would commit to lobbying the university to invest much more money into Hardship Funds and Bursaries for students, as well as advertising these fully to all students. Also, I believe that finance should not be a barrier to getting involved in the union and so I would work to ensure students are never out of pocket through their involvement in clubs and societies, for example through improving student reimbursement processes.
Employment can also be a significant source of stress for students, both whilst studying and when considering graduate plans. I want to reduce the stress this places on our students by improving careers guidance and support, and working with the Commercial Services Officer and QMSU outlet managers to support the welfare of our Student Staff. I also want to promote both our QMSU Living Wage jobs and external employers who pay Living Wage part time jobs to help our students afford to work less hours for the same take-home pay.

Very excited to be at the Whitechapel candidates debate this evening! If you're a BL student please watch along on the live stream below to see what your potential future representatives have to say.
Unfortunately, Executive Officer candidates were not included in the Whitechapel debates which is such a shame, as ALL QMSU Executive Officers are relevant to BL students, not just the BLSA President/Vice President Barts and The London. Nevertheless, as the only Vice President Welfare candidate in attendance, I'm really excited to hear from all of the BL candidates! If elected as your Vice President Welfare next year, I want to work closely with your BLSA President and BL Welfare Officer to introduce welfare initiatives that directly improve the welfare of all BL students and not just those in Mile End.

Many of you might not know that I was a manager at McDonald’s in a former life (before I came to university), and met the big man Ronald himself! All jokes aside, during my management experience I gained a lot of transferable skills like leadership, teamwork, time management, interpersonal skills, and how to make a pretty good Big Mac. It might not have been my final destination but the journey was very enriching, and has equipped me for many of the challenges I have already faced and will continue to face, especially if elected as your next Vice President Welfare.
If you're McLovin' my campaign, be sure to vote for me next week! I'll be around the campuses over the next two weeks so make sure you stop me and ask me any questions about my campaign!
Having been a student at Barts and The London for the last five years, I am all too familiar with the difficulties faced in our community and our specific welfare needs. I am also familiar with the common misconception that the only QMSU Executive Officer relevant to BL students is the BLSA President. However, if elected as QMSU Vice President Welfare, I want to implement policies that will improve the welfare of ALL students regardless of campus of study or faculty. I will ensure that I work closely with the BLSA President and the BL Welfare Representative to actively champion the welfare of our warm and welcoming community.
These policy ideas have come from both my own experiences as a BL student and the experiences of others. Other parts of my manifesto also affect BL students, such as a university-wide review of QM’s Security Services, particularly given recent events at our Whitechapel campus and the subsequent safety concerns of our students. Make sure to check out my full manifesto to see what else I hope to achieve for our community, and if there’s anything else you think our community needs then please drop me a message/meet with me for coffee!
I want to be a QMSU Vice President Welfare that supports our BLSA President, understands and spends time at our other campuses beyond Mile End, understands the welfare needs of BL students, and protects the spirit of our beautiful Barts and The London community.

*TRIGGER WARNING: Su***de*
Physical and mental health are the cornerstone of student welfare. Our union already does a great job of championing the health of our students but there’s always more that can be done. Whilst mental health receives a lot of attention, there’s room for improvement in the university’s policies, actions, and services.
Due to very unfortunate and tragic recent events, I want to lobby the university to co-create a specific Su***de Prevention Strategy with the union, and instate an opt-in system for notifying parents of welfare issues and concerns. Other universities, such as the University of Bristol, have introduced similar opt-in schemes for their students with great success. I will also establish life skills and peer support workshops for first year students struggling with the transition to university life to enable them to maximise their QMUL experience without negative impact on their welfare.
Mental Health First Aid training is an exciting and useful opportunity available to students through the QMSU Skills Award - however, I want to increase the number of these sessions available, to enable more students to become MHFA trained and have the skills to take care of their own mental health and others around them.
Our Advice and Counselling Service is another fantastic asset to the wellbeing of our students here, but is unfortunately not accessible for all students due to time constraints. I want to lobby the university for greater funding for A&C to enable them to offer extended opening hours during evenings and weekends, and have a presence at every campus, to allow ALL Queen Mary students fair access to these brilliant services.
Other health initiatives I want to implement are a full university review of our failing scandal-ridden Occupational Health Service with concrete plans for improvement, remove the £20 charge for a doctor’s note for ECs, and introduce new campaigns around safe drinking and substance use, self-care, men's mental health, and s*x and relationships.

Our education is ultimately why we’re all here at Queen Mary, and yet our studies can be one of the most influential factors in our welfare and wellbeing. I want to help reduce the negative impact our academic studies have on our welfare by bringing a renewed focus to this issue.
Students resitting, appealing, or being deregistered have a particularly stressful time and can feel lonely and unsupported through the process. I want the university to conduct a full review of these processes and improve communication with students, reduce waiting times, and provide greater support. I also want to improve union support for these students by hiring an additional member of Academic Advocacy staff at QMSU.
Study Well is another focus of my campaign - it’s a fantastic SU initiative that helps many students around some of their exam periods, but it could be more inclusive of all QM students. Many students have exams and deadlines outside of the current Study Well periods, and so I would plan to expand Study Well to become a full-year initiative with a presence at every QMUL campus.
Study space is a recurrent issue every year in every election - I will work with the other executive officers and continue the fight to increase the amount of independent study space, and improve the quality of existing study space, at every campus.
Finally I will continue the work of the union in ensuring the university guarantees that no students are academically disadvantaged by the UCU strikes, and that each school introduces an Academic Welfare Impact Review Group to assess the impact of decisions by the school on their students. These groups will be co-chaired by staff and student representatives to ensure fairness and balanced views.

Before my manifesto drops tomorrow I thought I'd tell you a little more about me and my experience for this role.
I'm a 4th year medical student at Barts and The London, here at Queen Mary University of London, and intercalated in Global Public Health last year. I've been a student here for 5 years now and have been heavily involved with the Students' Union during my time here. I have been a member of Student Council for 3 years and Welfare Zone for 2 years, holding multiple roles including Disability and SLD Representative, LGBTQ+ Representative, and Vice President Barts. I have also been a director of QMSU Services Ltd., the company within QMSU responsible for all commercial activity in the union and its outlets.
As a Supervisor at Drapers and The Griff Inn, I am often the first person to deal with incidents in the venue on a busy event night. I have supported students who have been victims of s*xual harassment or assault in the venues, and have witnessed first-hand how essential a zero tolerance policy is.
My wealth of varied experiences within the union and the wider university, as well as accessing support services for my own disabilities and mental health problems, have equipped me with the understanding, knowledge and the skills to lead our union and champion your welfare. Vote for your union. Vote for your welfare. Vote for me.
