If you’re the kind of gamer who won’t rest until every last component is equipped with RGB lighting, right down to the case fans in their PC, then do I have a smartphone for you. Nubia has just launched its RedMagic 7S Pro gaming smartphone internationally and, much like last year’s RedMagic 6S Pro, some models feature transparent backplates to let you see their internal RGB-equipped fans. Since launch, the base model of Samsung’s latest flagship series has been available in a very similar color the company calls “violet.” But this previous color was a lot lighter, verging on pink, and was also two-tone, with gold detailing on the camera bump and around the phone’s frame. The new purple is entirely uniform, with more or less the same color across the phone’s back, camera bump, and frame.

Zuckerberg has a plan to rescue Meta, but can he convince his own employees? 26/07/2022

Since Facebook started, he’d made a habit of frankly addressing employees directly at a weekly Q&A. Almost no topic was off-limits. But as the company grew, these sessions had become more scripted. He’d stopped showing up every week, instead letting other executives field the most upvoted questions submitted by employees.

GM announces plans to build ‘coast-to-coast’ network of 2,000 EV chargers at truck stops 18/07/2022

General Motors announced a “coast-to-coast” network of fast electric vehicle chargers installed at Pilot and Flying J truck stops and managed by EV charging company EVgo. The announcement is the latest sign that legacy automakers will need to spend their own money to shore up the US’ fractured EV charging infrastructure in order to build customer demand for new plug-in vehicles.

GM and Pilot Company say the new network will include 2,000 DC fast chargers installed at up to 500 truck stops and travel centers, capable of offering speeds of up to 350kW. The charging stalls will be built along US highways with the expressed purpose of meeting the needs of long-haul trucking and road-trippers.

The chargers will be in addition to the 3,250 chargers that GM is currently installing with EVgo, which the automaker has said will be completed by the end of 2025. The automaker has said it would spend $750 million in total on EV charging infrastructure.

Nintendo acquires animation studio that’ll become ‘Nintendo Pictures’ 17/07/2022

Nintendo has acquired CG production company Dynamo Pictures, and will rename it to “Nintendo Pictures,” the company has announced. The new subsidiary will “focus on development of visual content utilizing Nintendo IP” and the “planning and production of visual content including CG animation.” The company’s IMDB page lists credits on dozens of titles, including motion capture work on Death Stranding and Persona 5, and post-production work on Metroid: Other M.

The acquisition comes as Nintendo is gearing up for the most significant cinematic release in years; an animated movie based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise starring Chris Pratt. The film is currently scheduled to release in spring next year, almost thirty years after the last major cinematic adaptation: 1993’s live action Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. A live action adaptation of Detective Pikachu based on the Pokémon franchise was released in 2019.

The hidden history of screen readers 16/07/2022

OnOn a night in 1978, Ted Henter was driving a rental car down a dark road in the English countryside. A 27-year-old motorcycle racer from Florida, Henter had just won eighth place in the Venezuelan Grand Prix, the first race of the 1978 World Championships. He was daydreaming about his next race in Spain when he saw the other car driving straight towards him.

Henter had been driving on the right side of the road, just as he did back home. Instinctively, he swerved right. But the other driver, faithful to his own British instincts, swerved left. It was a head-on collision. Henter’s face broke the windshield and glass shards left him with detached retinas and eighty stitches on his face — including thirteen on each eyeball. Lying in the hospital, he thought to himself, Maybe I’ll have to miss the race.

After serving up a potential camping companion in the Ioniq 5 electric crossover, Hyundai EVP and head of design SangYup Lee pitched the recently-revealed Ioniq 6 as a “personal mobile studio” where you can not only work but also relax and revitalize. During a press briefing this week, the car was described as “a cocoon-like personal space.”

If you’re burning out working in a home office, how about switching to a movable one? It has 64 different interior colors and six pre-selected themes to match your mood. They can also brighten as you accelerate — a top-of-the-line model with two motors and AWD can do 0-100km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.1 seconds — to keep you aware of your driving speed.

The automaker emphasizes remote work features such as a “bridge type” center console designed to hold a laptop and a notes application built into one of the two 12-inch screens. There are also four USB-C ports, plus one USB-A port to power various devices and slimmer car seats to help maximize cabin space. Hyundai maintains that they are still very comfortable and are even designed to lean back and sleep on.
