A 1950’s inspired cookbook doodle I have been playing around with 🥰

Photos from sophiagrausamartwork's post 14/11/2023

My submission for in collaboration with .

This piece represents Brahms Requiem and the emotions that are felt while listening to it. Brahms wrote this requiem after the loss of his mother and a close friend of his. To start healing from such a painful loss, he wrote this piece to help not only himself, but to help others who are grieving.

I wanted to represent how music can help us heal and how we can hide our emotions within music. Whether we play an instrument, sing, perform or just listen. Music is meaningful to all of us somehow and it can help us heal.

The figure is hiding in the shadows of the waist of the violin to represent how music will always be there for us, even if we want to be hidden away from the world. It protects us even in the darkest of times.

"Birds & Whistles. - Dessert Cuckoo Clock" - Editorial Illustration Class Assignment.

03/11/2023

A recent class assignment for Editorial Illustration class. This is an editorial illustration graphic I have been working on for a very eye opening article about how child labor is used for mining cobalt for companies like Apple and Tesla. Child labor is used in Congo to mine cobalt for batteries in phones and electric cars. The phone or device you are currently reading this on was probably involved in such things for it to work. Just a small reminder of the little things we take for granted and overlook in our day to day life.

I just realized that I never posted my Sophomore Illustration final! I was so caught up in final reviews, moving home, etc… that my art account kinda got put on the back burner ☹️ My vintage desserts linocut did get finished and this is how it came out. The assignment was to choose a random color out of a hat and create a piece of art that represented that color. I pulled red and my mind went to vintage cookbooks like Betty Crocker immediately (of course knowing me lol)… I decided to try linocut printmaking for the first time and this assignment made me fall absolutely in love with it. I’ve been printing a lot this summer and I will post more of my prints soon!

Here is some progress of what I have been working on everyday for the past month. It’s a flash sheet for my stepdad for his birthday. It’s of our soul dog Mulder who passed away in November of 2021. My stepdad has been wanting a floral design of Mulder for a tattoo for a long time and I wanted to do the design for him. The floral, greenery comes from my stepdad being a gardener and his love of the Earth. It’s far from done; the flower part is still a draft sketch, and I still need to finish the face part, but I’m VERY close! Lots of little lines and erasing over and over to get the fur in the correct direction, etc… More to come soon when finished! 🌿🌸🐾

“Drowning in Paint Water” - Charcoal - By: Sophia Grausam - 2023.

This is a piece I created for the “Art For The Year 2173” Art show at MassArt. This show was curated by the incredible and .

I decided to create this piece to represent that focuses on the theme that as artists we can affect the environment as well. We use many materials that will eventually and currently affect the environment. I wanted to create a charcoal self portrait that shows me floating in water with a fishing net, and ropes wrapped around my neck to represent the cycle of the disaster we caused. This idea originated from my hometown of Gloucester and the hardworking Fishermen who are craftsmen themselves. Many make and bind their own fishing nets, but sadly many get left out at sea. As “artists” we need to think about how we ourselves are affecting the world around us. We are creating beauty as artists in the world, but are we really?

An Eddie Munson fan drawing I have been working on for months now 😅. I finally finished it over winter break and I absolutely love how it came out! I’m such a huge fan of Joseph Quinn and the character he portrayed in Stranger Things Season 4. He deserves all the support and love his fans give him and more!

My parents got me a 24 color set of for Christmas! I really fell in love with gouache this past semester at MassArt because of my Media Techniques class. I learned so much about them and how cool they truly are. I learned about the Himi brand jelly gouache sets from a friend of mine at MassArt and they seemed so cool! Here is a sushi painting/illustration I did today to test them out! Thanks 🍣

Today I had my final reviews of the Fall Semester! Here is my table and wall set up.
I am officially done with my first semester at MassArt!! Woohoo! I’ve loved every second of this past semester and every single class/ professor I had! Thanks for making my first semester at MassArt a memorable one! I am so grateful for the support and opportunities I had this semester! I learned more in one semester than I have at my past 3 colleges I have attended all together. It’s been a crazy experience, but I loved every single second, late night studio time and early mornings! I truly worked my ass off and I think it showed. I can’t wait to get started for Spring Semester and my coming years at .students! 🥰
