Almost 300 students with disabilities who attend SUNY and CUNY colleges, as well as private colleges and universities from every corner of New York state, advocated for their budget priorities today in Albany.
They are asking for:
$13 million in state funding to support Enhancing Supports and Services for Postsecondary Success of Students with Disabilities. Students and advocates have been calling for a full investment in the capacities of higher education institutions to support the access and inclusion of New Yorkers with disabilities in higher education since 2018, and it has been a NYS Regents Priority for four consecutive years. Only $2 million/year has yet been received. For FY2023-24, Regents has requested full funding of the program at $15M to meet students’ needs.
The passage of S1880, which would expand financial aid options for college students with intellectual disabilities, and make aid sources such as TAP accessible for these students.
According to NYSED, the number of students attending New York State degree-granting colleges and universities continues to grow. More than 86,000 students with disabilities are currently in attendance for the 2022-2023 school year, significantly up from the 63,005 students attending in 2015-2016.

I was the poor kid growing up. My mom used to send me to birthday parties with no present, just so I could eat. I definitely got to a point where I understood and was embarrassed as hell.
In fifth grade, my friend’s mom invited me to sleep over the night before the actual birthday party. When her daughter was in the shower, the mom laid out the toys that she had bought her daughter for her birthday. She let me pick one to wrap and put my name on.
I’m 37 now. I am still grateful to that mom. That one act made such an impact on me.
Always be kind. 🙏
If you see someone falling behind, walk beside them. If someone is being ignored, find a way to include them. If someone has been knocked down, lift them up. Always remind people of their worth. Be who you needed when you were going through hard times.
Just one small act of kindness could mean the world to someone.
