What does an ANTI-INFLAMMATORY diet do?

Your immune system becomes activated when your body recognizes anything that is foreign—such as an invading microbe, plant pollen, or chemical. This often triggers a process called "inflammation". Intermittent bouts of inflammation directed at truly threatening invaders protect your health.

However, sometimes inflammation persists, day in and day out, even when we are not threatened by a foreign invader. That's when inflammation can become our enemy. Many major diseases that plague us—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer's — have been linked to chronic inflammation.

Choose the right anti-inflammatory foods, and you may be able to reduce your risk of illnesses above. Consistently pick the wrong ones, and you could accelerate the inflammatory disease process leading to these diseases.

TIP: Consider the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils. Consult your nutritionist before diving to any diet.

FATS-TALK Series: How can I lose visceral fats? Is there such thing as spot reduction?

In nutrition and fitness, there is no such thing as spot reduction. You really need to consistently lose body fats to be able to mobilize visceral fats. While some people do exercises for the abs, it just firms up or tightens abdominal muscles. Some would take surgical procedure such as liposuction but it does not go deeper than the abdominal wall. To be able to stay away from health risks, you need to address the root cause and other contributing factors to fat deposition.

Some studies will show that improving diet quality, cutting down on simple sugars, sweets, and complex carbs help lower visceral fats. Similar to any reducing diet for fat loss, we need to gradually lessen the amount or the total caloric intake. Avoiding unnecessary and unhealthy sources of calories like unreal, processed and junk foods is a good first step in doing this. You can easily strip off a good 150-200 calories by giving up a small bag of chips.

Research findings say that increasing physical activity/aerobic exercise to 60 minutes per day over 3 months reduces visceral fat volume by about 30%. There is link between regular physical activity and decreased visceral fat volume, despite no or minimal alteration in total body weight, across both sexes and regardless of nutritional status. I often see this in practice.

Did you know that even sleep may affect long-term visceral fat accumulation? Adults who sleep for less than an average of 6 hours per day tend to have higher levels of visceral fat. In another study, extremes in sleep duration, 5 hours or less and more than 7 hours is associated with increased amount of visceral fats in the body.

These are just some ways on how we dig into these deep deposits. First step is to measure, take action with the guidance of health professionals, and then track.
