The introduction of zirconia (white) crowns in pediatric dentistry was revolutionary, particularly for repairing baby teeth with cavities in the front, where teeth are most visible with a smile! 😃
We could now offer an incredibly durable, esthetic option that seemed to surpass our previously available options, including composite strip crowns and preveneered stainless steel crowns. However, there was insufficient controlled, prospective data to make this claim. 📚
As part of my thesis, I compared these three options with the support and guidance of an excellent team! 👩🏽🔬📊
Zirconia crowns were found to hold up better in certain key areas including integrity (fracture resistance), color match and color stability. 📈
We also assessed parental satisfaction with all three options and found that parents were most concerned with the color of crowns, where zirconia crowns exceeded. 🦷
Dentistry, and particularly pediatric dentistry, requires creativity as we must factor in patient cooperation in addition to cost and time among other factors.
Zirconia crowns do have limitations and there is a place for each restorative option. They are just another tool in our toolbox! 🧰
