Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, was walking through a park one day in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.

Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.

The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."

Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.

During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.

Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.

"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.

Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." The little girl hugged the new doll and brought the doll with her to her happy home.

A year later Kafka died.

Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:

"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."

I can't take it to the beach for a walk because it bothers you on your vacation, you don't allow me to rent a house if I have a dog, nor can I put it on urban public transport.
However, I can take him to the rubble to look for you after an earthquake, in the forest after you got lost in the mountain and you had no map or GPS; under the snow, because you did a forbidden off-piste; in the water, because despite the red flag, you have bathed and wherever you need to, because finally, it is just a dog ... but he will find you.

Ronald McNair

Ronald McNair was 9 years old when a South Carolina librarian told him he could not check out books from a segregated library in 1959. Refusing to leave, a determined McNair sat on the counter while the librarian called the police, as well as McNair's mother. The police arrived, told the librarian to let the young boy have his books, and McNair walked out alongside his mother and brother.

McNair went on to earn his Ph.D. in physics at MIT and became one of the first Black Americans selected as astronauts by NASA, alongside Guion S. Bluford, Jr. and Frederick Gregory.

McNair's first spaceflight was the STS-41B mission, aboard the "Challenger" shuttle. He successfully maneuvered the robotic arm, which allowed astronaut Bruce McCandless to perform the first space walk without being tethered to the spacecraft.

The second space flight for McNair would be his last. He, along with six other NASA astronauts, were aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger when it exploded 73 seconds after takeoff in 1986. Everyone on board the shuttle was killed.

Today, the library in South Carolina where McNair was refused books is named after the heroic boy determined to make a difference.

Wrote my first romantic short story with a male protagonist.

31/08/2020

Kara is back in her hometown after her NY advertising job downsized and a sudden breakup with her boyfriend, Jamie.
Trying to decide what to do, stay or return to NY, she discovers Greg, her high school and college boyfriend is also back in town.
Will a Hallmark-style Christmas magic reunite them, or will the arrival of the NY ex dampen a rekindling of the romance?
Is there a happy ending?
Not quite the usual Hallmark-style ending. No long drawn out kiss as Christmas fireworks blast into the starry sky. Not this time.
This time it has a twist ending and is not your typical =style Christmas movie.

Mary McCauley Romantic Short Stories 22/06/2020

Amazing how a story comes into my mind without pre-thought. I hear the words as if spoken by the character--most of my stories are more dialog than description. As the story is 'told' to me, I write and am continually amazed at how it unfolds. I don't plot, I don't design characters, I let them evolve.
In various interviews, Stephen King describes his writing process as β€œwatching” his characters and writing down what they do. He says he's often surprised by the choices they make. He is simply the person narrating the story.
I certainly am not a writer quite as proficient as Mr. King, but I know what he means about the story being told to him.
I have several books on Amazon but most of my stories are on my Blog and free to read. You can click on the blog. bookmark it, and read when you have time for a romantic short story.

An almost perfect Christmas Movie short story.

Kara is back home after her dream advertising job in NY had major cutbacks and a breakup with her boyfriend, Jamie.
Trying to decide what to do, stay or go back to NY, she discovers Greg, her ex-high school and college boyfriend is also back in town.
Will a Hallmark-style Christmas magic bring them back together, or will the arrival of the NY ex dampen a rekindling of the romance?
Is there a happy ending? Not quite. No long drawn out kiss at the end of the movie as Christmas fireworks blast above. Not this time. This time it has a twist ending and is not your typical Christmas movie.
Where else can I send it, if not to ?
Should I change the ending?
Should she choose Greg or Jamie or…?
Suggestions welcome.

Some of M. Bradley McCauley's early childhood memories are imagining scenes and playing different characters in her fantasy day-dreaming world. Saturday matinees fueled her acting ambition, eventually replaced by an insatiable need to put pen to paper, eventually keyboard and let the voices of her characters tell their stories.

While fiction is the main outlet for the words flowing from her imagination, in high school she was drawn to the writings of Emerson, Thoreau, and other historic legends including philosophers, writers, statesmen, inventors, and poets.

Imagining what of 14 Greats would say if writing to us today, she created, A Little Bit About: Mini bios of Historic Greats.

Ms. McCauley's first published novel, Annon's Secret Something Within, takes us to the spacious mansion of Annon where characters come to learn how to change their lives.

Janice Smith, a popular Amazon reviewer wrote, "Once or twice in a lifetime, we read a book that is life-changing. Annon's Secret Something Within is just such a book. This book speaks to the soul of each reader in an unforgettable way..."
The author insists the hardest part of writing the book was writing 'The End'. Annon and the eight characters are embedded in her writer's imagination and heart.

Ms. McCauley's next adventure is an eBook mystery with a little bit of romance. International Intrigue - An Irene Devlin Mystery, follows retired schoolteacher Irene Devlin on her last covert operation for SIP, Systems Intelligence Program. Danger, mystery, and intrigue follow her from London to Paris and the South of France where she finally encounters her unknown enemy.

Recently she returned to romantic fiction publishing, A Little Bit of Romance on Amazon. Currently, she is preparing, "A Little Bit More Romance, a series of longer romantic short stories for Amazon Kindle publication.

Ms. McCauley lived a life of travel and adventure. From 15 years in a small town in PA, she lived in Germany, first as a military brat in an American High School, where she traveled to Rome and Paris on school trips, to being a military wife and mother of six in the late β€˜60s and numerous homes in the states.

Her husband's military retirement did not halt her traveling nature. As a group tour travel agent on Florida's Gulf Coast, she took groups of senior citizens on cruises and tours. From ice fishing on the Bering Sea in Nome, Alaska to cruising the Fjords of Norway, she became a veteran International traveler. A trip to Australia and New Zealand was a dream come true as was her final travel agent's adventure cruising the Mediterranean and returning to Rome after 45 years.

Now retired and indulging in her love of writing, her adventures are enjoying time with her 13 grandchildren.

I've been going through a long non-creative writing period. I haven't written a short story for months. I've been editing older stories and articles via Grammarly and Hemingway Edits, both free programs.

That can be frustrating when Hemingway shows I have more adverbs than normal or too much passive voice, extra-long sentences, etc

Probably why I haven't been writing creatively, aware of too many mistakes.

What I would like is to write the stories then have a good writer/editor rewrite them and be my co-writer.

Writing is something I do because I have to. Characters with stories pop into my thoughts and will not leave me alone until I release them in the written word, mostly on my romantic short story blog.

Currently, I have 33 Hallmark-style stories published on the blog with 14,000 plus views, all free to read. Readers bookmark the blog, then return to choose which story to read when they have some free reading time.

Stories range from meeting and falling in love, former broken romances renewed, and a few never too old for romance tales. There are a few love gone wrong stories that made their way there,

I am happy to post links on the Blog for anyone who writes in the romance genre Stories or books. Links can be provided via email or facebook PM.

I welcome comments and suggestions for this page.
