Climate Crisis Advisory Group
We are an independent international scientific body created in response to the climate crisis to help inform and guide climate repair.
Copernicus ECMWF World Meteorological Organization finds Europe had a record number of extreme heat stress days last year and is warming 2x faster than the rest of the globe 🌡️
We must:
🚫 Rapidly reduce GHGs
✂️ Remove excess GHGs
🔨 Repair damaged parts of the earth
💪 Strengthen resilience
On and the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement, CCAG’s Professor Mercedes Bustamante reflects on Brazil’s progress on climate since 2016. 🌎⬇️
“Earth Day is a celebration of our common home. It reminds us how unique and precious our planet is and how dependent we are on its proper functioning. Earth Day is a call to action to protect, conserve, and restore our ecosystems. Two prominent and interconnected crises - climate change and biodiversity loss - require our effort and mobilization to bring about rapid, robust, and just solutions.
Eight years after the Paris Agreement, we can still not achieve its goals. In Brazil, we have once again reduced deforestation in the Amazon, but we still need to consolidate this achievement and replicate it in other Brazilian biomes. There has been an essential mobilization of civil society, scientists, indigenous peoples, and traditional communities to strengthen the sustainability agenda, however we still encounter significant resistance from the political system.
The next few decades are decisive, and our dependence on natural resources is another reason for betting that Brazil’s future lies in sustainability.”
According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration greenhouse gases in the atmosphere grew at almost record fast paces last year 🌡️
CO2 increased by 2.8 parts per million, and methane jumped by 11.1 parts per billion. We are not reducing emissions rapidly enough to limit the earth’s warning.
We can’t afford to not consider all possible available options to manage and mitigate the impacts of climate change ❌

All eyes are on John Kerry as he steps down as US climate envoy, today - but what of his successor, John Podesta?
According to CCAG’s Alice Hill, “the selection of Podesta is welcome news as we urgently seek global action to limit temperature rises to 1.5C.”
“Podesta joined the climate fight decades ago, and through his years of service he has excelled in getting things done.
“He will be a critical component to ensure the US is at the vanguard of global climate action for COP30 and beyond.”
Emissions reductions are no longer enough to ensure a manageable future for humanity ❌
We need urgent climate intervention, including the removal of excess GHGs and repairing parts of climate systems 🌎

“2024 could be hotter than 2023, with more extreme weather events as El Niño takes hold. We must address climate change urgently to mitigate its impacts.”
Last weekend CCAG member was interviewed in The Observer by comedian discussing whether 2024 could exceed 2023 as the hottest year on record - and how there’s still reason for optimism despite this
Many countries including the US and the UK continue to approve new fossil fuel infrastructure – despite record-high emissions and the growing impact of climate change.

Young voices matter.
cloverhogan's message to changemakers at and elsewhere:
"Young people have the courage to swim against the status quo; to speak out against outdated systems that are no longer serving our planet or people.
"That's why it’s more crucial than ever that our generation – the generation inheriting the worst impacts of the climate crisis – are included and engaged during key climate moments."

You're not alone in worrying about – and by speaking up each of us can help catalyze action:
1️⃣ Make it clear there's a mandate for climate action
2️⃣ Influence policy by putting pressure on politicians
3️⃣Use our power as consumers
4️⃣ Inspire those around us
Lorraine Whitmarsh MBE spells out what is needed in this powerful excerpt from CCAG'S latest public meeting.
The doesn't care about politics.
Humans have overloaded the carbon cycle with more emissions than the planet can handle.
Now we need to do all we can to fix it, says Marty Odlin, CEO and Founder of Running Tide.
🌍 Don't bottle up :
🗣️ Talk about it
🌱 Adopt planet-friendly lifestyle choices
💸 Use the power of your wallet
These small steps will help drive the big societal changes needed to fight .
A must-watch from Professor Mark Maslin:
🔥🛢️The relentless burning of fossil fuels is causing a food systems crisis.
Nyombi Morris's plea for and is to focus on the issue of starvation in Africa – a consequence of climate change largely driven by developed countries' emissions.
"We need to address the issue of starvation that is becoming rampant in the entire continent.
"It's crucial to invest in sustainable agriculture, which serves as the backbone of many African economies. We can achieve this through prioritising sustainable farming practices, research and technology, and supporting smallholder farmers to adapt to the changing climate.
"We also need to prioritise climate education and awareness. By empowering citizens, especially young people, with knowledge about climate change and its impacts, we can build a sustainable future for Africa."
🌍🌎🌏 and are vital opportunities to explore climate solutions for Africa and the world.
But meaningful progress will require more than just words, says climate campaigner Seyifunmi Adebote:
"I am counting on African leaders not to make new ambitious pledges and unrealistic commitments.
"We do not need new pledges from our leaders. We need them to showcase climate adaptation strategies and home-grown innovations that work, can be replicated, can be invested in, and can be a model for other parts of the world - beyond the African continent."
