A little blurb about the show I attended in Michigan, sums it all up!
Bewitching Peddlers is unique in that it summons the most celebrated Halloween artists in the country to one location. Each Season, seasonal collectors heed the summons of enchantment and fly, drive or carpool their way to historic Marshall Michigan to see their favorite artists, in person.
In the earlier days of collecting Halloween art, the way we communicated and gathered looked much different. Collectors would see something that took their eye, and then look to acquire the piece. In the early 2000ās you could stumble on a Halloween artist featured in one of many arts and decorating mainstream magazines of the time. Country Living, Romantic Homes, Early American Life, Victoria, Prims, and Art Doll Quarterly were always full of new artists.
Another way a collector could find new works to collect was on eBay. Artists would use abbreviations when describing their work to set them apart. Through magic and investing a lot of time online, collectors learned what abbreviation meant what and they began to search that way.
Blogging was also very popular. Once you were excited by the work of a particular artist, you could go to their blog and read more. You could message back and forth with the artist directly and peek into their world in that way. I found many a lovely Halloween friend, by blog hopping my way around the internet. Some might call this falling down a rabbit hole, like Alice did in Wonderland, but I like to think of it as filling my cauldron with magic, which has sustained my love of fine Halloween art.
Another way you could find Halloween works was on a whisper. Friends and acquaintances would hear that you were the odd one. The person who likes spooky things, the curiosity lover, the seeker of Halloween. Those friends would relay all of the magical details to you. From art shows to curious finds, on a whisper the words found you.
The way we find Halloween art may have changed a small bit, but the whispers are still there, the magic is still thick in the air. One only has to reach for it.
Creating a collection takes years of persistence. Itās truly the longest trick or treat you will every experience. A collection takes on a personality, all of the pieces culminating into some grand thing that brings the same wonder as preparing for Halloween night as a child.
The joy of collecting Halloween art is deepening your knowing. Itās seeing your favorite artists creative process or how the materials are stirred up to created something lovely. Itās understanding that you are building a collection and your entire collection can become a work of art.
I hope you will pull back the veil this September and join us for the most magical Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween yet.
