Our Eduahck project is coming to an end, but there is still time for the last online event organised by our Italian partner Ergon. The event will explain how hackathons can be useful in the fields of education and training for stakeholder and employee engagement. In addition, other useful digital tools will be explained to innovate the industry and make solutions more participative.

EduHack Samsun, Education Innovation Hackathon was held on 13-15 October 2022 with the participation of 66 people in the Multi-Purpose Hall under the auspices of the Governorship of Samsun. In the event, where the educators are in the majority, but there is still a diversity of participants, first of all, meeting and team building activities were carried out. Our mentors, who are experts in their fields, enabled the participants to meet and form groups in a fun way with various ice breakers and team building games. During the event, excitement, enthusiasm and tempo were always tried to be kept high with various energizers. You can see photos and videos of these events below.
Eduhack Samsun Education Innovation Hackathon also included short training sessions and speeches aimed at helping participants learn and think from different perspectives. On the first day of the hackathon, Izgören Academy Black Sea Regional Director, trainer and consultant Şehnaz Dereli, known for her thought-provoking and enlightening training, delivered speeches titled "21st Century Competencies", "Solution development, idea generation". On the second day of the hackathon, a "Presentation Workshop" training was held by Berat Kjamili, who founded EUvsVirus, the world's largest online hackathon of the European Commission, in which more than 21,000 people attended to find a solution to the pandemic. The purpose of this training is not only to teach the participants the details of making an effective presentation, but also to prepare them for their presentation in front of the jury and other participants.
Hackathon jury consists of the following people who make decisions by thinking analytically and take part in activities that affect the local education system due to their duties: Köknal Karabiber (Strategy and Coordination Manager of Samsun Governorship Investment Monitoring and Coordination Presidency), Sümer Çakır (Middle Black Sea Development Agency Planning Specialist), Hamza Tural ( Atakum Science and Art Center Director).
Two of our mentors had previously attended both our hub meetings and the LTT activity in Italy.
In total, 5 presentations were made by the participants. Among these, the solution proposal of the "Karmasyon Group", which includes holistic arrangements to encourage the preference of vocational high schools by gaining prestige in the society, won the first prize.
EduHack Samsun Education Innovation Hackathon was not only a fun competition for the participants, but also an instructive, inclusive, networking event that allowed the creation of new ideas.

✨On 3-5 June we finally held ! We had 3 days filled with creativity, synergies, learning, fun, and above all, passion to build a better world.

For 3 days, was an epicentre for innovation. A place where people who strive for better education could meet and, together, developed outstanding solutions.

We had superb mentors who gave us good notions of design thinking, business model canvas, prototyping and pitching techniques. We saw how secondary school teachers, university lecturers, EdTech startups and UX/UI designers amongst others worked together to achieve common goals.

💪 It was tiring, but we all came back home reenergised and ready to hack the world!

🙏 Inifinite thanks to , , , , , , -Rocket, , , who joined us as mentors or gave us amazing gifts for our participants!

Two weeks ago, EduHack’s first education innovation hackathon that took place between 13 and 15 May 2022, ended in Science Centre AHHAA, Tartu, Estonia. In the following we are sharing some of the results and photos of the 3 winning teams.

The teams of educational experts and enthusiasts who gathered to the centre to find a solution to their pressing problems came from various regions of the country – from Tartu, from further South in Võru County and also from the East, namely from the Ida-Viru County. As a delightful surprise, two participants join the hackathon after having travelled from as far as Romania.
The event was a mixture of informative and insightful presentations and training lectures, work in groups, consultations with mentors and idea pitching in front of a jury. The 2.5 half days of intense work was held together by Toivo Värbu who is a locally well-known event host but also a teacher and theatre performer. In order for the participants to gain more knowledge about team work, the educational hackathon scene in Estonia and how to shape ideas into doable projects, the agenda included both on-the-spot as well as video presentations by professionals in the field. More specifically, Maria Rahamägi from Edumus shared her experience in running the Education Upgrade Hack in the capital city Tallinn, Anna-Liisa Ingver from Ingver Meedia OÜ illustated the thought-to-actionable-idea design process and Jana Karilaid from M.I.K.S Konsultatsioonid enlightened everyone on the facets of leadership and teamwork.
The members of EduHack’s Estonian Hub acted as mentors of the hackathon, working together closely with the teams and later evaluating the progress made in the jury.
The first prize went to kood/Jõhvi, an international programming school that won the jury over with its idea of creating a self-directed learning based coding platform kood/Everywhere. The second place was achieved by Tartu Hansa School with its website Hariduskohver (the Educational Suitcase) that is aimed at students, parents and parents alike and offers study materials that interconnect different subjects and methods. The third prize was given to an education cluster from the Ida-Viru County called Hariduskopter for their plan to come up with a system to help young teachers to find their way to the remote regions of Eastern Estonia and stay there for longer.

The hackathon was a great opportunity to work intensely on various problems with some participants even wishing for it to have been an overnight event. Future collaborations were also discussed and the teams also considered the chance to participate in future education innovation hackathons taking place in the country.

And we did our first mini education hackathon! Thanks to the design thinking methodology taught by Lorenzo from Ergon, our teams were able to be active participants of an education hackathon 🙌

Together, we developed plenty of viable solutions to solve the following issue: how can we include students in the evaluation process so that they can include evaluation as part of the learning process instead of it being a final goal?

🎨 🖥️ When graphic designers, video makers, illustrators & students meet to discuss the challenges we could solve with an Education Hackathon.

For Hugin&Munin one of the biggest challenges is to bridge the gap between traineeships and higher education. Students should be more prepared to face a professional environment, and enterprises in the creative sector should also be better prepared to understand the needs of the trainees.

✨ Hackathons are a way to test ourselves and really find innovative solutions with a great team. All moved by a common goal, in Italy, another Erasmus+ project, IN EDU project, did something worth writing about.

💪 The teams made of young teenagers created information campaigns for the challenge.

How is a day at the Hackathon?

Hackathons usually start with presentations related to the topic or focus of the hackathon. Then the participants are divided into teams according to their personal interests and skills. (If you have formed and joined your own team, you can continue with the same team.)

Then the real competition begins. Teams need to brainstorm among themselves in order to complete the task and then put the idea into code. This main part can take a day or a week. During the competition, food and beverage and, in some cases, sleeping bags are distributed to the participants by the hosting company.

At the end of the period, a session is held in which the results of each group are presented to the jury and other participants. To catch big ideas and work in progress, people often post a video of demonstrations, show results with screenshots and details, suggest a place for open source code, and wrap up their presentations.

One common misconception people have about freelance web development is that you need to be an elite coder to try it. A lot of new coders hold this same misconception about hackathons. The most important is beginning with a simple project and having fun out of it. Attending a meetup event can be a good start. Meeting new people, forming an ad-hoc team, and combining each others' strengths into a tightly scoped project will be exhilarating for new beginners. Eventbrite is one of the platforms where you can find a lot of local hackathons. https://www.eventbrite.com/d/online/hackathon/
