Lymph is a clear, watery liquid that begins as fluid flowing between the cells, interstitial fluid is not called lymph until it drains into the network of lymph capillaries located in the tissue spaces. From lymph capillaries, lymph flows into larger vessels called lymphatic’s which are studded with filters called nodes or lymph glands.

Unlike the blood circulation, which has a heart to pump it around, the lymph is not pumped, but is moved when lymph vessels are compressed by surrounding muscles as they contract during movement. Massage is an important means of speeding up the flow of the lymph.

Swollen lymph glands commonly indicate disease. With massage comes an increase in blood circulation which stimulates the nervous system, the skin, the muscles, circulation, digestion and the lymphatic system.
