I took my usual walk around the garden yesterday and was so pleased to see more and more flowers. This rain is helping them bloom.
Our fellow plant lovers with their babies at our first of many soirees. This is so inspiring to me.
I think a lot can be accomplished when like minded people get together for a common interest.
Laughter, friendship, community, and plants are the BEST medicine.
Sow joy, my friends.
My very gracious friends offered me the use of their greenhouse. Let me just say.... the plants are happy. So warm and snuggly. And I get the pleasure of watching their plant babies grow, too. Win/ win. Gosh I love spring.
Reminder! Our first spring swap/ sale is coming up this Saturday at 10 in the Joelton Hardware parking lot. Second one is may 15. Same time. Same place.
Happy Thursday, friends!
Does anyone's driveway resemble this?! I have some stuff for the swap/ sale on Saturday and the rest is for my garden.
We are always adding to the madness around here and a greenhouse is on the list to be up and ready this fall. I won't miss caring trays of plants in and out! π€£π
We always add Super Thrive to the water for the seeds/seedlings. A little goes a LONG way. It helps root development and makes strong plants that are ready to withstand transplant shock when they go in the ground.
Once they have true leaves, we add some Foxfarm's liquid fertilizer to their water once a week.
Once in the ground, they get a monthly dose of organic slow release and foliar feed with compost tea.
My dad and I have a thing for trees in cool pots.
He gifted me this Japanese Maple last year and I got an amazing deal on the pot when I visited my parents in Tullahoma.
I'm proud to say that it made it through the winter on our back porch and has been delivered back to her rightful position in the garden by my husband and our good friend Joshua.
I know you can't see it all that well, but fear not! I shall update y'all on her progress.
Also, feel free to share your inner plant nerd's delights on our page here. It's fun to see how different folks do things and what they grow : )
Happy Saturday!
Sugar Snap Peas! I put them in a pot this year to save garden space. I don't grow these for volume - just the enjoyment of having something gardeny to eat fairly early in the growing season.
They're such a good, early garden reward.
I love to add the shoots that I pull when thinning to stir fries and omelets. So tasty! The actual peas rarely make it to the kitchen. They're so good picked and eaten in the sunshine fresh off the vine.
Second photo is my dog watching me shell peas last year and hoping for a treat. He follows us around as we pick and happily snacks on most of the garden goodness. Peas are his favorite.
And finally, two Peas in a pod, because whenever I see the aforementioned legumes, I have to take a photo before snacking.
Happy Friday, y'all! We've nearly made it to the weekend!!
Echinacea. Purple coneflower. Whatever you call it, it's my favorite.
I was gifted these roots around 15 years ago and they have moved with us twice.
Echinacea is a wonderful plant that is beautiful, but also functional and can be used in teas and tinctures to help boost your immune system. (I'm not a doctor - just into plants that help us stay healthy.)
Also! The pollinators love them! So many buzzy things and butterflies come when they bloom.
I leave the dead flowers on plants that I haven't harvested to feed the birds in the winter. It's fun to see the finches and other wingy creatures nibble on the seed heads.
I'll have some at the swap at Joelton Hardware on Aprill 17. Boxer not included ; )
And don't worry! If you don't have tradeable goods and want to buy, you can. We're just all about spreading the plant love in our little community however it works best for folks.
Happy Thursday friends!
Let's talk onion chives!
I use them as mini retaining walls to keep beds from washing.
They're perennial! Divide them every couple of years and you'll have a small chive army ready to retain, repel, and make your food tasty!
They are a good natural pest control. Of course, that's a job that can't be left to chives only, but they help : )
They're green early in the year and as a person who struggles to make it through February with a positive attitude, seeing the chives start growing gives me a boost.
Their flowers are beautiful. I pinch the heads to promote green growth until I harvest my first batch to dehydrate, then enjoy the beautiful flowers. (They're edible, too!)
They're also good on food! Fresh or dried, they add an oniony pop that is quite satisfying.
Have a lovely day and if you're considering chives for your garden, go for it!
Just me and my boy on a seed planting day last week. And the pansies are still. So. Pretty. I'll be sad to see them go, but am looking forward to planting summery things there soon!
What new plants are we trying this year, friends?
I harvested stinging nettle this weekend and will have a pot of two of this on April 17 to trade.
Worried about not having anything to trade? Anything having to do with plants/ gardens will do! Think outside of the box. Pots, garden tools, garden/ yard decorations are all acceptable forms of currency : )
