WHY IS COVID SO EXPENSIVE IN THE HOSPITAL?

Having a critical illness is enormously expensive, and severe COVID is no exception (3 MILLION PESOS for a COVID patient? Totoo yan!). A lot of people can't fathom why it's so expensive. Let me break it down for you:

✖ PPEs for every shift for every medical worker that comes into contact with you. AND THAT'S GONNA BE A LOT. Doctors, nurses, med tech, rad tech, respiratory tech, etc etc (that is not donated. Still that is a lot. My private hospital uses up to 1000 masks a day.)
✖ Xrays everyday
✖ Blood tests everyday, like a LOT initially
✖ If your lungs fail and you need to be hooked to a mech vent? You gotta pay for the use of that complicated machine everyday + payment for extra special PPE for intubation + payment of intubation (which can infect a doctor the most, so that ain't gonna be cheap + intubation meds involved, which also ain't cheap)
✖ Use of cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter everyday
✖ Intravenous lines
✖ Special arterial lines in critical patients + payment for the minor surgery involved with the insertion + medicines involved
✖ You may have to pay for other extra catheters
✖ Antibiotics. SEVERAL of them.
✖ Other medicines needed to keep you healthy like vitamins
✖ Maintenance meds if you have hypertension, diabetes, etc
✖ Oxygen everyday if you're required to have it
✖ You can't stay in a regular room. Ideally you need to be placed in a room/ward with negative air pressure so the infected air won't circulate in the room. Yep you pay it everyday.
✖ You may need to pay for specialized IV or NGT everyday nutrition if you cannot eat (if you're intubated)...and yes it's not cheap
✖ You pay for all the staff who take care of you, and it is not cheap because you need constant monitoring to make sure you're ok and to catch any problems. These people are risking their lives, so you bet hazard pay should be involved. The nurses and staff who turn your body so your breathing can be better? Just touching a COVID patient gives them significant risk. They have to be compensated for that.

I'm sure I missed a lot more, but let me emphasize, these things add up to a LOT. It is NOT easy treating severe COVID and you cannot cheap out on treatment. I'm not surprised at the price at all.

Also, average stay of a severe COVID patient in the hospital? 14-20 days. Let that sink in.

🚫 AFTER APRIL 15, PHILHEALTH WILL NOT PAY FOR EVERYTHING ANYMORE. JUST THE CASE RATES. And you bet your ass that's not enough if you have severe COVID. Not even half of it.

We're all better off staying at home.
