BSP to lower RRR ‘when time is right’

The BSP would lower reserve requirement ratio when the time is right, possibly by 2024 according to the BSP Governor.

“The RRR is the portion of reserves that banks must hold onto rather than lending out.” - Business World

BSP remains at its hawkish stance to control inflation rates. It’s Key Policy Rate has been held steady at 6.25% for the past 4 previous meetings.

This implies that the BSP is trying to control inflation rates since it has jump to 5.3% from 4.7%, however it has since gone down from the early months of 2023. The current key policy rate has been at its highest in the span of a decade. Pushing it higher may risk of economic contraction. Nonetheless the GDP is still growing but at a lower rate. This is being done to control inflation and keep it at its target rate.

The BSP estimates that key policy rate hasn’t affected the GDP as in their models, they are trying to balance supply and demand forces.

Philippine Shares rose on Thursday despite an increase in US consumer inflation last August, stocks took a rebound as the local equities have been oversold. The Sentiment was the Fed was unlikely to raise their policy due to lower economic output as seen in its jobs data. Their core inflation nonetheless decreased but CPI increased due to higher fuel prices of which isn't included in core inflation. This is especially important due to how the US affected global economies. Aside from that, local bank data for loans and interests remain stable despite the increase in rates and inflation.
