Depression is one of the most common co-occurring diagnoses with ADHD. With ADHD being so widely misunderstood, it's no wonder how ADHDers can develop negative self-talk and feelings of hopelessness.

Getting stuff done is so hard with ADHD. πŸ’œ Sometimes you try and it just doesn’t work. Sometimes you play β€œEverybody dance now” over your ear buds and the house gets picked up in one hour. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Dopamine helps so boost dopamine to find motivation. πŸ•ΊπŸ½

Motivation can be hard to find for the ADHD brain. The key is to boost dopamine. Pleasurable activities boost dopamine. If you can add a pleasurable task to a challenging one, then maybe it can feel a little easier to get stuff done. β€πŸ¦
What helps you to get motivated?

Anxiety often accompanies ADHD for two reasons. 1) Anxiety puts our brain into action mode. 2) Anxiety keeps us vigilant. Anxiety compensates for executive dysfunction in ADHD. 😬

Movement isn't just good for your muscles and heart. Your brain benefits from all types of exercise!

But why does the ADHD Brain struggle with Executive Function?

Photos from Cup of ADHD's post 17/03/2023

Working memory is an executive function. It impacts our ability to plan, organize, and follow through on tasks. For ADHDers, working memory can be a lot like a sticky note that isn't very sticky. It's hard to get things done (sticky note) when your brain won't hold onto information (working memory). πŸ™ƒ How do you get things done with ADHD?

Self-regulation and executive functions (EF) are the same thing. EF skills helps us to stay regulated throughout the day. For example, eating regularly helps us to sustain energy levels, regulate mood, and can even affect focus. Eating regularly also requires a TON of EF skills. Learning to implement EF skills effectively in your day (by working with your brain) is the key to more consistent self-regulation. πŸ’š

Self-control is also known as self-regulation. In order to maintain self-regulation throughout the day, we must use executive functioning skills to meet our needs and get stuff done. This process can be very challenging for ADHDers who might attempt to execute EF skills in a neurotypical way. Finding ways to work WITH your brain can help.

πŸ’œ What helps you stay regulated throughout the day? πŸ’š

We're swinging in to March a few days late, but stay tuned for exciting conversations about this month!

Photos from Cup of ADHD's post 08/02/2023

Hyperfocus can occur in romantic love. Romantic interest is fun for your brain. Fun and pleasure release dopamine. πŸ‘‰ Sometimes this flood of dopamine might contribute to a feeling of being stuck on a romantic interest. The feelings may fade, or the feelings might give you enough courage to approach the person. ❀
How have you navigated romantic love?

Showing yourself compassion can be challenging. It's often easier to be compassionate toward others than toward one's self. This month we're focusing on ways to take care of ourselves. Building an awareness of the times when you are less compassionate toward yourself can be a good place to begin. When you notice you're being hard on yourself, trying changing the way you speak to yourself. Try to speak from a place of acceptance and compassion. Think of how a friend might speak to you in this moment.

Self-love is appreciation for oneself that grow from actions to support one's happiness, health, and well-being. Self-love has health benefits as well. You don't have to do ALL the things to cultivate self-love. Maybe pick one that seem easy to integrate into your day and give it a try. What is your self-love practice?
❀❀
Today, my self-love practice was eating a meal that I wanted to eat, instead of eating my kid's leftover food. 😁

Masking is often triggered by a lack of understanding and intolerance for difference. Masking can be adaptive in some instances and might be an effective survival strategy. It can also take a toll on self-esteem and identity development.

Intelligence is not correlated to ADHD. Many ADHDers are very intelligent, but performance is significantly impacted by ADHD and executive functioning (EF). So, it's challenging to demonstrate understanding of a concept in school when EF is affecting your performance. But demonstrating understanding if very different from actual understanding.

What are some challenges you've faced in demonstrating your knowledge?
