5 DAYS AZADCC CONFERENCE KICKS OFF IN KABWE

The 19th Biennial General Conference of the Zambian Diocesan-Catholic Legion, the Association of Zambian Catholic Clergy -AZADCC has commenced in Kabwe, with Right Rev.Bishop Mulenga SDB of the Kabwe Diocese welcoming participants as host Bishop. The 5days conference, themed "Priests Transforming Communities and the Environment in the Spirit of Synodality," aims to promote integrated priestly life, unity, and collaboration among Catholic priests.

In his keynote speech during the launch at Stephen Luwisha Secondary School, Right Rev.Bishop Mulenga SDB disclosed that the conference which is being attended by priests from all the 11 dioceses in Zambia seeks to share experiences, challenges, and best practices in ministry, Promote unity and understanding among priests, enhance collaboration with local bishops and the Zambian Conference of Catholic Bishops and promote self-reliance and ongoing formation opportunities

Bishop Mulenga pointed out the crucial role of priests in transforming communities and saving the environment. He highlighted their proximity to the people, understanding of local culture and needs, and association with local ordinaries.

Addressing President Hakainde Hichilema, Bishop Mulenga said the Catholic Church in Zambia acknowledges and appreciates the government's development programs but notes that more needs to be done. He says the Church works with the government to assist people in their various needs, promoting justice, peace, and charity.

Bishop Mulenga said the conference plays a significant role in the individual and collective life and ministry of local priests, providing an opportunity for sharing experiences, promoting unity, and enhancing collaboration.

And speaking when he graced the event, President Hakainde Hichilema praised Bishop Mulenga for hosting the conference and delivering a thought-provoking homily which focused on everyone being a good shepherd like Jesus and emulating the life of St. Monica which was of sorrow, pain, and yet she held on to her faith. Dr. Hichilema acknowledged the Church's role in evangelizing, teaching values, and serving communities, stating that the government values the Church's contributions to society.

The President underscored the need for partnership and collaboration, dispelling rumors of tension between the government and the Church. He denied claims that the government is against the Catholic Church, calling it a "fallacy" and an "imagination of somebody."

President Hichilema reiterated his commitment to working with the Church to better the lives of Zambian communities. He praised the conference theme, "Priests Transforming Communities and the Environment in the Spirit of Synodality," as "extremely appropriate" and emphasized the need for sustainability in community development.

The address aimed to clarify the government's stance on its relationship with the Catholic Church, assuring the conference attendees that the government seeks to work together to achieve common goals.

President Hichilema said there is a need for the government and the church to work together to address challenges such as hunger, sustainability, and resilience.

The President announced various initiatives, including the installation of 100 megawatts of solar power in Chibombo, encouraging the Church to promote food production, and providing agricultural credit facilities to Church members.

He also emphasized the importance of education, skills training, and social media responsibility. President Hichilema acknowledged the Church's influence in communities and encouraged them to promote education and skills development.

The President expressed his commitment to fighting corruption, stating that it has nothing to do with church affiliation, ethnicity, or political affiliation. He encouraged the Church to work together with the government to address social challenges.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Augstin Mwewa, National President of the Association of Zambia Diocesan Catholic Clergy (AZADCC), posed a challenge to the priests, urging them to embody synodality by listening to every individual, understanding how God speaks to them, and fostering deeper communion, participation, and openness in fulfilling their mission.

He highlighted the pillars of synodality - communion, participation, and mission - and questioned how the priests are failing to achieve these goals. Fr. Mwewa said there was a need for teamwork, participation, and dialogue within the Church and society.

The AZADCC National President proposed key elements for the conference, including listening, speaking out, celebration, sharing responsibility, dialogue, and ecumenism. He also stressed the importance of authority and participation, urging the priests to apply their knowledge and skills in an ordinary way to transform their communities.
