Health Benefits of Garlic
By Dr Willie T. Ong

Garlic is a commonly-used food ingredient. The plants’ bulb is used to give flavor to various dishes. Garlic has a pungent and spicy flavor that mellows with cooking.
In addition to taste, garlic is widely believed to prevent and treat diseases. There are some studies to support the claim that garlic may help patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease.
What is the ingredient in garlic that can explain its medicinal use? Researchers discovered that fresh garlic contains a chemical called allicin. It is the active ingredient in garlic and the source of its distinct smell. Hence, the stronger the smell and taste of garlic, the more potent it is. Crushing the garlic will release the allicin more fully.
Here are some of the potential benefits of garlic. There is no harm in adding more garlic to your usual food intake. But remember, these scientific claims are by no means definitive yet.

Possible Benefits Of Garlic:
1. High blood pressure - Some studies report that garlic can reduce the blood pressure in hypertensive patients by as much as 7%. It may also lower the blood pressure in normal people.
2. Atherosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries” – As we age, our arteries tend to stiffen and this can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Preliminary studies show that the intake of garlic appears to delay this process. Moreover, garlic appears to thin the blood, an effect similar to aspirin.
3. High cholesterol – Many studies have been done to determine the effect of garlic on cholesterol and triglyceride levels (fats in the body). So far, the results are not unanimous. Garlic may have some effect on cholesterol but it is only minimal. Future studies may clarify this claim.
4. Cancer of the stomach, colon, re**um and prostate – Increasing the intake of garlic seems to lower the risk of getting these types of cancer. A study of Chinese males shows that those who ate one garlic clove a day appeared to have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. This research was carried out at the Department of Urology, China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing.
5. Fungal infections of the skin – A study shows that applying a gel made of garlic improved skin conditions such as ringworm, jock itch and athlete’s foot.
6. Warts – The use of a garlic extract seems to have some effect on warts. However, this will take weeks of treatment. The faster cure would be to have it cauterized by a dermatologist.
7. Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) – Initial data shows that eating garlic may help improve symptoms of an enlarged prostate, including better urine flow, and less bathroom visits to urinate.
8. Prevents food poisoning - Researchers believe that garlic help delay food spoilage. In the laboratory, fresh garlic (not old garlic) has been shown to kill bacteria such as E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis.

Negative Studies:
There have also been studies on garlic that showed negative results. Garlic does not appear to have any effect on blood sugar and diabetes.

Possible Side Effects:
Even if it’s just food, garlic may cause side effects. Fresh garlic may cause bleeding in certain people with stomach problems, ulcer, during surgery and dental procedures. Since garlic seems to thin the blood (hence, its benefit for the heart), you should stop eating garlic two weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Using too much garlic for the skin may cause skin damage similar to a burn. Garlic may also cause bad breath, heartburn, upset stomach and body odor.

How To Eat Garlic:
For most people, garlic is safe to eat. Garlic is safe for pregnant women and children when taken in the usual amounts with food.
According to Dr. Robert Lin, a leading garlic researcher, taking 3 cloves of garlic a day is good for the heart and can reduce your cholesterol levels. To best release its anticancer ingredients, the garlic clove should be crushed and gently cooked with a little oil. Don’t burn it, or else it will lose its health effects. Garlic can also be eaten raw, and added to salads.
In summary, it’s okay to eat garlic for the potential health benefits. Just don’t overdo it. You still need to see your doctor for your medical condition. Good luck.
