The Last Mambabatok:
Whang-Od Oggay, (born Feb. 17, 1917)
a filipino tattoo artist from the tribe of Butbut in Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga- Philippines
She has been tattooing headhunters and women of her tribe since she was 15 years old. Back then the warriors used to earn tattoos through protecting their villages and killing their enemies. These days, Apo Whang Od continues to apply her traditional art form to tourist visiting Buscalan.
How to get there:
1.) Take a bus from Manila to Bontoc- CODA LINES Corporation have direct trip from manila.
2.) About an hour and a half jeepney ride from Bontoc to Tinglayan or Tabuk. Hop off at Bugnay and another motorbike ride to the drop off point to the village. This is the point where your tour guide usually meets you.
3.) Do the trek for about an hour to reach the registration center of the Village. Then get settled at the home stay you have book.
It is recommended to book ahead your homestay and tour guide before going there, since your tour guide will be the one to book your tattoo appointment to Apo Whang- Od and to any of the tattoo artist. Apo Whang od only do her trade mark 3 dots design and you may opt to have other traditional designs done by other artist in the Village. We only spend a night there so im still lucky to have the 3 dots from her despite the long queue.

Now converted into a museum with exhibitions of Taiwan Folk Arts, Taiwan Aboriginal Art and early clothing and textiles of Taiwan.
