CONDITIONAL DIVORCE?

TEXT: MATTHEW 19:1-12

KEY VERSE:
“And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” – (Matthew 19:9)

In 2019, there were about 800,000 divorce cases in Europe. The number was around 1.042 million in the United States. Available data show that the number of registered divorce cases in China rose from 2.7 million in 2010 to 4.7 million in 2019. South Africa had 23,710 cases the same year. More than 200 divorce petitions were filed in one state in Nigeria each month in 2021.

The contention regarding divorce has existed for centuries. Jesus told the Pharisees and the crowd that listened to Him that no man should put asunder what the Lord had joined together. Men were sending away their wives, hypocritically citing Moses’ injunction of giving the writing of divorcement. He plainly told them that Moses permitted that because of their hardened hearts. He explained that the only condition for divorce was fornication, which was applicable to people who were engaged to marry. Adultery, not fornication, is applicable in marriage.

By implication, Jesus was saying that there was, in fact, no condition for divorce after marriage. He made it clear that if anyone puts away his wife and marries another, he has committed adultery. Moreover, anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

The society has refused to accept these biblical truths. Young men and women now enter into marriages as contracts and divorce after a few years, citing “irreconcilable differences”; However, God’s word cannot be disputed. If you have divorced your wife, get her back. If you have married a divorced fellow, be it a man or woman, it will be wisdom if you quit the marriage in order to save your soul.

In Psalm 146, we are looking at the first line of verse 1, and the last line of verse 10 which reads, PRAISE YE THE LORD! The psalmist begins by giving us a commandment and privilege to praise the Lord. This is not just for one day or a moment in time, but for while we live. It is a calling and commandment which becomes our commitment to praise Him at all times.

William Folorunso Kumuyi (born 6 June
1941) is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church situated at Gbagada Lagos and its International Conference Center at KM 42 Lagos - Ibadan Expressway Nigeria. He is the author of several books. In the early 1970's Kumuyi worked as an Lecturer at University of Lagos.

LIFE

Pastor W.F Kumuyi was born into a Christian family in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State, Nigeria. He completed his secondary school education in
1961, and in 1962 started teaching Mathematics at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun-State, from where he proceeded to the University of Ibadan and in 1967 graduated
with a first-class honours degree in Mathematics . He became a born-again in April 1964.
Kumuyi remarried in October 2010 in London, about 18 months after the death of his first wife, Abiodun Kumuyi whom he married in 1980.
In April 2013, Kumuyi was named as one of the "500 most powerful people on the planet" and Deeper Christian Life Ministry named as
"the World's largest Megachurch" by Foreign Policy magazine.

THE MASTER KEY THAT UNLOCKS HEAVEN’S DOOR

Our text opens with Peter and John going to the temple to pray at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. At this time, the disciples still used the temple as their meeting place; therefore they participated in the regular prayers. Traditionally, Jews pray three times a day (Psalm 55:17). Peter and John were often mentioned together in the book of Acts and at this time, they were seen going to pray. It is good when believers are associated together in a noble cause. The idea of having prayer partners, evangelism partners etc is still useful and helpful today.

Why is prayer an absolute necessity for true followers of Christ?

After the ascension of Christ, the disciples had evidently learnt their lesson on the need to pray without ceasing. They had come to realize that prayer is the master key that unlocks heaven. This could be attested to as they gathered in the upper room, awaiting the outpouring of the Holy Ghost as promised by Christ (Acts 1:8, 14; Luke 24:49). Even after their enduement with power by the Holy Ghost, they continued in prayer daily with one accord in the temple (Acts 2:46). In fact, the apostles considered prayer a major duty, because they believe by so doing they would be able to sustain ministry fire, power and passion and still manage crises, solve problems and keep the fellowship of the brethren. Rather than lose focus, they appointed men to serve tables while they gave themselves “continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). This teaches believers the necessity of regular fervent prayers if we are to succeed in preaching the word and the task of world evangelization.

Not much can be done without effectual fervent prayers. It was at the time Peter and John were going to pray that the miracle in our text took place. Also, Peter had the vision to reach out to the household of Cornelius while on the housetop praying (Acts 10:9). W
