Seneca Nation, New York State Agree to Short-Term Compact Extension, Continued Negotiations

ALLEGANY TERRITORY, SALAMANCA, N.Y. – Following a face-to-face meeting between Seneca Nation President Rickey Armstrong, Sr. and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, along with representatives from both governments, the Seneca Nation and New York State have agreed to a short-term extension of the Nation’s current Class III gaming Compact. The two governments have also agreed to continue negotiations on a new Compact agreement.

Representative Nick Langworthy (R-23) is the latest elected official to call on Governor Hochul to negotiate a fair and equitable gaming compact. Senator George Borello has frequently urged New York State to meet with President Armstrong.

“We are just weeks away from the expiration of the state’s gaming compact with the Seneca Nation, and we’ve been left in the dark by Governor Hochul,” Langworthy said. “Over a thousand jobs in my district and the Seneca Nation are dependent on this compact, and these employees deserve to know if their jobs are safe or if their gaming licenses are in jeopardy. Whether it’s a new compact or an extension of the current compact, Governor Hochul must provide a timely update.”

This film skillfully tells the story of the Lakota’s Land Back movement and describes how sacred land was stolen in violation of treaty agreements. A New York Times Critic's Pick, "LAKOTA NATION VS. UNITED STATES" chronicles the centuries-long quest of Očeti Šakowiŋ to reclaim their sacred land of the Black Hills.

You are invited to a special screening of the award-winning documentary "Lakota Nation vs. United States."

We are showing this movie during Native American Heritage Month to promote cultural understanding, create discussion on social injustices still happening in our Indigenous communities and celebrate Indigenous-led narratives in the film industry. The push for Indigenous narrative sovereignty is vital in the Indigenous fight for equity and social justice that still impacts us today. Just as we have our own historical conflicts with NYS, this is an opportune time to show the unique challenges that Nations have faced historically and in the present. We are excited to be a part of this film’s journey in their goal to be Oscar nominated.

BREAKING: The Seneca Nation has reached an agreement on principle with New York State negotiators on a new Compact. The agreement will protect the Nation’s operations, jobs, and economic benefits.

The proposed Compact must be approved by a referendum vote of the Seneca people, and must also be reviewed and approved by the United States Department of Interior before it can go into effect. Work will continue to finalize the agreement.
