There is often a lack of teaching on disease presentations in BAME patients among medical schools. This can result in BAME students feeling underrepresented as well as students in general being under-prepared for the realities of clinical work where they will, ultimately, have to recognise various presentations of the same diseases in various skin photo-types.

Lacking this diagnostic range may lead to later diagnosis of conditions in darker skin types and in more serious cases, endanger lives.

Despite the manifestation of skin disease varying greatly among skin photo-types, we are often taught to use skin descriptors that were developed based on patients with light skin, and shown example case photos almost exclusively of diseases in white skin.

Ethnic minorities have already been shown to experience worse health inequalities so let’s all try and encourage positive change by signing the petition below to promote better awareness of these issues in medical school curriculums:

change.org Medical schools must include BAME representation in clinical teaching

Insightful post by SGUL DermSoc on some of the ways POC have been impacted by racism in the field of dermatology.

As future doctors, we should all educate ourselves on racism within the field and contribute to raising awareness and actively making positive changes to address these issues.

The abhorrent police brutality in the US and the horrific murder of George Floyd have sparked the current global conversations around racism, and it is imperative that we continue the discussion to examine how deeply embedded systemic racism is in our society, especially in healthcare and within the NHS. Racism insidiously affects the healthcare and treatment given to Black and Brown people. SGUL Dermatology Society stands with and chooses to take this opportunity to reflect on some of ways systemic racism remains pervasive in dermatology, and how this must change, explored by our Treasurer Hira Mayet in this post.

As we are a new society and just formed this year we have been so busy getting started up that we forgot to give a shout-out to the members helping make things happen in our first ever committee!🙀
