Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ Exceptional Leadership Qualities

A person’s leadership skills are gauged in the way how effectively he can mitigate loss during difficult times, and how well he facilitates proceedings.

Sometime before the sahaba were on the verge of migration to Madinah, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was in a need of a solution to an immense pressure which was put on his financially weaker followers. The possibility of a negotiation with the Makkan leaders was zero. Hence, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ sent his first followers to Abyssinia, yet there were many Muslims who were tortured in Makkah; his followers were growing. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ had to do something.

During the Hajj season which followed the Abyssinian migration, the Prophet of peace ﷺ began to see tribal chiefs who might accept his followers and give them refuge. Some refused right away for their commitment to idolatry, others had fallen prey to the anti-Islamic propagandas by the Makkans.

During his search, the Prophet of mercy ﷺ came across six men of Khazraj from Yathrib (Madinah was called Yathrib becore Prophet Muhammed ﷺ migrated there), and kept his proposal before them. They were surprised to hear it. They said to each other: “So this is the prophet about whom the scholars of our Jewish community kept us telling about?” They thought that since their land is facing social troubles, the presence of the Prophet ﷺ would bring peace to their lands. They put forth their terms.

What were their terms? Did Prophet Muhammed ﷺ agree to their terms and conditions? All of this in our next part inshaAllah.

*Need of Seerah of Rasoolullah ﷺ in our Lives*

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

The life of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ and his companions is a constant source of inspiration for those who want to lead meaningful and successful lives. Thus a need was felt for creating a space which is dedicated to learning about the Prophet of Islamﷺ, his life, his qualities and virtues, his habits (sunnah) and the lives of his companions ؓ.

It is necessary to learn about the life and deeds of Allah's Messengerﷺ, in order to lead our lives as per His commandments, since Allahﷻ says:

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) an excellent pattern of code of conduct (33:21).

Say, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (3:31)

It is highly encouraged that we speak about the sunnah of Rasulullahﷺ. We must learn about the sunnahs of our beloved Prophetﷺ, in order to live a good and meaningful life in this world, and attain success in the Hereafter.

The love of Rasulullahﷺ is a vital part of faith, as it is pointed out in the hadith:

"None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind."

So we must all love Rasoolullahﷺ and demonstrate it through our actions, speech and writings.

*Prophet Muhammed’s ﷺ Patience as a Teacher*

A teacher has to have many qualities in himself, and patience is one of them. Prophet Muhammed ﷺ had all of them with the most perfect balance. If someone starts enumerating them he can easily pile up voluminous content on the same.

Out of many traits, a genuine teacher is the one who retains good temperament while giving instructions. Once, Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hakam al-Sulaimi ؓ was praying in congregation, and of course Prophet Muhammed ﷺ was leading the prayers. During the salah, someone sneezed and Sayyiduna Muawiyah ؓ responded to the sneeze. At that time, few others started looking at him, in order to indicate that he shouldn’t have responded in prayers. Not getting it, Sayyiduna Muawiyah ؓ replied verbally to them and said: “What have I done?” in order to defend himself.

Subsequently, everyone in the congregation started hitting their thighs, indicating that this should be ended, and that they’re all in prayers. After the prayer had concluded, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ came to this companion and said: “It is not permissible to speak while praying, rather one must recite only from the Quran and remember Allah.” That is all what the Prophet ﷺ said – with a humble and friendly voice.

Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hakam al-Sulaimi ؓ later recounted this incident and said: “May my father and mother be his ransom, I have never seen a better teacher than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By God, he neither hit me, nor insulted me, nor even spoke rudely to me.”

This is How Sahaba Loved Rasoolullah ﷺ

Before the start of the combat at Badr, Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم was himself correcting the positions of those sahaba who were standing a little front or back in the rows. He صلى الله عليه وسلم approached a companion standing out of line, tapped his belly with his arrow so that he may go little back, and said: “Keep in line, O Sawad.” Sawad bin Ghaziyya (raziAllahu anh) stepped back in line but then called out: “Ya Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم! You’ve hit me. I swear by Him who has sent you with truth, I want my rights back!”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned back to see where the voice came from, bared his stomach, and quickly gestured by saying: “Here! Take your rights back” signaling Sawad ؓ to hit Him صلى الله عليه وسلم back.

The eyes of all the companions were now on Sawad ؓ to see what he would do. But what Sawad ؓ did next left everyone stunned. He came in front of Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, leaned down, kissed his صلى الله عليه وسلم stomach, and then wrapped his arms tightly against Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم to hug him.

His intentions were just to make the most of the opportunity he had created to show his utmost and unconditional love towards Rasoolullah Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم asked: “Why did you do such a thing, O Sawad?” Sawad ؓ reasoned and said: “Ya Rasoolallah صلى الله عليه وسلم! As you can see, battle is upon us. I am unsure of my survival. Thus, if I were to be martyred, I wanted the last thing I did on earth was my skin touching yours, so that I stand in front of Allah after getting martyred with such a blessing.”

Sawad ؓ had shown his sensational, burning and unconditional love for Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, a gesture which Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم didn’t leave Sawad ؓ unrewarded. He صلى الله عليه وسلم complemented Sawad ؓ and made a special dua for him.

LETTER TO UNION NATION, UNITED NATION GENERAL SECRETARY, UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, Ban Ki-moon (Secretary-General of the United Nations), UNICEF, European Broadcasting Union, United States Supreme Court, UNSECO, European Commission, European Parliament.

Respected Sir,

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the Prophets. (Holy Qur'an 33:40)

This is a collection of short quotations from a wide variety of Non-Muslim notables, including academics, writers, philosophers, poets, politicians, and activists belonging to the East and the West.

To our knowledge none of them ever became Muslims. These words, therefore, reflect their personal views on various aspects of the life of the Prophet.

Washington Irving (1783-1859) Well-known as the “first American man of letters".
“He was sober and abstemious in his diet, and a rigorous observer of fasts. He indulged in no magnificence of apparel, the ostentation of a petty mind; neither was his simplicity in dress affected, but the result of a real disregard to distinction from so trivial a source ... In his private dealings he was just. He treated friends and strangers, the rich and poor, the powerful and the weak, with equity, and was beloved by the common people for the affability with which he received them, and listened to their complaints ... His military triumphs awakened no pride nor vain glory, as they would have done had they been effected for selfish purposes. In the time of his greatest power he maintained the same simplicity of manners and appearance as in the days of his adversity. So far from affecting regal state, he was displeased if, on entering a room, any unusual testimonial of respect were shown to him." [Life of Mahomet, London, 1889, pp. 192-3, 199]

David George Hogarth (1862-1927) English archaeologist, author, and keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
“Serious or trivial, his daily behaviour has instituted a canon which millions observe this day with conscious mimicry. No one regarded by any section of the human race as Perfect Man has been imitated so minutely. The conduct of the Founder of Christianity has not so governed the ordinary life of His followers. Moreover, no Founder of a religion has been left on so solitary an eminence as the Muslim Apostle.” [Arabia, Oxford, 1922, p. 52]

John William Draper (1811-1882) American scientist, philosopher, and historian.
"Four years after the death of Justinian, A.D. 569, was born at Mecca, in Arabia the man who, of all men exercised the greatest influence upon the human race . . . Mohammed." [A History of the Intellectual Development of Europe, London, 1875, vol.1, pp. 329-330]

Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) French poet and statesman:
"Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images; the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?"[Translated from Histoire De La Turquie, Paris, 1854, vol. II, pp. 276-277], Lamartine, Histoire de la Turquie, Paris 1854, Vol II, pp. 276-77:
“If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples and dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and souls... the forbearance in victory, his ambition, which was entirely devoted to one idea and in no manner striving for an empire; his endless prayers, his mystic conversations with God, his death and his triumph after death; all these attest not to an imposture but to a firm conviction which gave him the power to restore a dogma. This dogma was twofold, the unit of God and the immateriality of God; the former telling what God is, the latter telling what God is not; the one overthrowing false gods with the sword, the other starting an idea with words.”
“Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images; the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?”

Edward Gibbon and Simon Ocklay, History of the Saracen Empire, London, 1870, p. 54:
“It is not the propagation but the permanency of his religion that deserves our wonder, the same pure and perfect impression which he engraved at Mecca and Medina is preserved, after the revolutions of twelve centuries by the Indian, the African and the Turkish proselytes of the Quran...The Mahometans[1] have uniformly withstood the temptation of reducing the object of their faith and devotion to a level with the senses and imagination of man. ‘I believe in One God and Mahomet the Apostle of God’, is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honors of the prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtue, and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion.”

Bosworth Smith, Mohammed and Mohammadanism, London 1874, p. 92:
“He was Caesar and Pope in one; but he was Pope without Pope’s pretensions, Caesar without the legions of Caesar: without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue; if ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by the right divine, it was Mohammed, for he had all the power without its instruments and without its supports.”

Annie Besant (1847-1933) British theosophist and nationalist leader in India. President of the Indian National Congress in 1917.
"It is impossible for anyone who studies the life and character of the great Prophet of Arabia, who knows how he taught and how he lived, to feel anything but reverence for that mighty Prophet, one of the great messengers of the Supreme. And although in what I put to you I shall say many things which may be familiar to many, yet I myself feel whenever I re-read them, a new way of admiration, a new sense of reverence for that mighty Arabian teacher." [The Life And Teachings Of Muhammad, Madras, 1932, p. 4]

W. Montgomery, Mohammad at Mecca, Oxford 1953, p. 52:
“His readiness to undergo persecutions for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement – all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves. Moreover, none of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad.”

James A. Michener, ‘Islam: The Misunderstood Religion’ in Reader’s Digest (American Edition), May 1955, pp. 68-70:
“Muhammad, the inspired man who founded Islam, was born about A.D. 570 into an Arabian tribe that worshipped idols. Orphaned at birth, he was always particularly solicitous of the poor and needy, the widow and the orphan, the slave and the downtrodden. At twenty he was already a successful businessman, and soon became director of camel caravans for a wealthy widow. When he reached twenty-five, his employer, recognizing his merit, proposed marriage. Even though she was fifteen years older, he married her, and as long as she lived, remained a devoted husband.
“Like almost every major prophet before him, Muhammad fought shy of serving as the transmitter of God’s word, sensing his own inadequacy. But the angel commanded ‘Read’. So far as we know, Muhammad was unable to read or write, but he began to dictate those inspired words which would soon revolutionize a large segment of the earth: “There is one God.”
“In all things Muhammad was profoundly practical. When his beloved son Ibrahim died, an eclipse occurred, and rumors of God’s personal condolence quickly arose. Whereupon Muhammad is said to have announced, ‘An eclipse is a phenomenon of nature. It is foolish to attribute such things to the death or birth of a human-being.’
“At Muhammad’s own death an attempt was made to deify him, but the man who was to become his administrative successor killed the hysteria with one of the noblest speeches in religious history: ‘If there are any among you who worshipped Muhammad, he is dead. But if it is God you worshipped, He lives forever.’”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian thinker, statesman, and nationalist leader.
"....I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These, and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every trouble." [Young India (periodical), 1928, Volume X]

Reverend Bosworth Smith (1794-1884) Late Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford.

Without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue, if ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by a right Divine, it was Mohammed; for he had all the power without its instruments and without its supports." Mohammed and Mohammedanism, London, 1874, p. 235]

Michael H. Hart (1932- ) Professor of astronomy, physics and the history of science.
"My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level."
