Contact tracing is one of the most difficult and subjective parts of pandemic control. It is also one of the most essential. It is very dependent on the cooperation of the index case and the ones being contact-traced. We definitely need more contact tracers. Meanwhile, here are some things the general public can do to help facilitate contact tracing:

1. If you are tested because you have symptoms and were exposed, don't wait until you have a positive test to think about the people you came into close contact with. Make a list with contact numbers and offer it to the LGU so they can act on it immediately if the test comes back positive. In fact, they can already alert those people to do meticulous masking and come in for testing if they are symptomatic. You can also text people you know who are your close contacts to let them know you are a suspect and that they should watch themselves for symptoms and consider isolation and testing if symptomatic.

Close contacts are defined as:
1. same household
2. physical contact
3. >15 min within 3 feet
4. within same enclosed space for more than 2 hours
5. (For healthcare worker) contact with known positive with inadequate PPE.

Wearing a mask and faceshield reduces risk, but one will still need individual assessment if he/she meets the definition of a close contact to determine if testing and isolation/quarantine is still needed.

2. If you are informed that you were exposed to a suspected COVID case, don't panic. Depending on the exposure and your symptoms, you may or may not need a test and you may or may not need to isolate/quarantine yet. Call DOH 1555 or you barangay for a proper assessment. If you are symptomatic, you probably will need to isolate and test. If you are asymptomatic, the need to test and isolate will depend on your degree of exposure, time of exposure, whether you were wearing PPE, date of last exposure and your general health status. This is not something that can be settled without talking to a healthcare worker one on one. For businesses with occupational health doctors, you should speak to one of your company physicians immediately. When in doubt, quarantine/isolate and contact a healthcare worker. If at any point you feel unsafe, go to the emergency room.

3. We all have a role to play in this pandemic. Meticulous masking, eye protection/face shield and physical distancing are the tools that we use to protect each other. It isn't perfect so some will get infected. Understanding that infectious diseases can spread exponentially, the second layer is contact tracing which we can all help facilitate by cooperating and being proactive. Digital contact tracing apps will also be rolled out and hopefully these will help facilitate the speed and precision of these efforts. Stay safe. - ctto
