Videos by Stephanie Barenz. I create paintings and prints about the way our external surroundings form our internal landscapes.
Slow acts of noticing transform our lives from feeling uninhabitable to a feeling of belonging. Walking or finding ways to access the world through our senses allows us to hold two opposites in our minds: The permanence we feel when we ground ourselves in nature and the impermanence of nature itself. The water and woods depicted in this collection are from places that have shifted my understanding of home — from Shanghai to Southeast Asia to Lake Mendota itself. Un/Inhabited felt like a natural progression from my previous collection A Walk With Water while building more deeply into the ideas of reflection, grounding, and transformation.

2022 you are a year I will never forget! This year I felt like I lived nine lives - Expats in Shanghai, lockdown in Shanghai, getting out of lockdown in Shanghai, moving to the US, online teachers in Hawaii, seeing family for the first time in two years, saying goodbye to friends, saying hello to Madison, celebrating ten years of marriage in Italy, starting my business in Madison— okay maybe that is more than nine. It has been a crazy year with ups and downs and I wouldn’t change any of it. I am signing off for this week and am wishing you all a wonderful holiday! Sending you all love and light. Thank you for all of your love and support in 2022! #2022 #2022recap #2022reels

Watch to see how I am turning one my favorite daily walks from my five years in Shanghai into a mixed media painting. 🚶♀️ 🖼 🎨 Walking is my favorite way to cultivate creativity, meditate, stay grounded, and exercise. My studio is finally filling up with studies of my last five years of walking after a year of transition. It feels so good to be here, looking through these photos, and reflecting on where they took me - internally and externally. I have heard and read about so many people who have rediscovered their love for walking through the last three years of the pandemic. If you are one of them and want to share, comment below. . #walkingrenaissance #walkingmeditation #walkingandmaking #walking #dailywalk #artmaking #studioprocess #mixedmediaart #painting #photography #artprocessvideo #artprocess
I am offering 25% off all of my originals and prints that are on my website this holiday weekend. 🌲 🎁 Rarely do I discount originals but I need to create some space because of my recent move. Combining two studios and ten years of work is quite the process! This will be the last and largest sale I will have until next Black Friday. Starting on Thursday the discount will automatically be applied to each item in my shop, no need for a code. The sale will be over at the end of the day on Monday, Nov. 28th. I currently have four different bodies of work on my website from 2019 to 2021. Many of them come framed and are ready for hanging. 🖼 You can see the entire shop by going to my website, www.stephaniebarenz.com. Link in bio. Please reach out with any questions about my originals. If you want a closer look at any of the paintings I am happy to send you a video. Happy Holidays! ❤️
A continuation from the piece I was working on in Procreate last week. Printed out some different pieces, cut them out and now I am playing with the composition some more + adding some more color. Will post more process videos this week as it progresses. 😊 #painting #paintingprocess #processvideo #artistsoninstagram #artvideo #artreel #processreel

My work is about the way places form us. Specifically, locations centered around water, my chief source of inspiration given its tremendous power—as a force of nature, a site of cultures, and a profound symbol of transition and transformation. I live and work in Madison, Wisconsin which is coincidentally situated between and around two bodies of water. Did I choose this place or did it choose me? ❤️ #madison #wisconsin #artaboutwater #inspiredbywater #waterinspired #waterinspiredart

Today I sent an announcement to my list about my new collection Eventide. If you would like to join I would love to have you! I am offering a discount code and a small free gift at the end of the release. Sign up through my homepage to follow along: https://www.stephaniebarenz.com Here is the copy from today’s announcement: This series is inspired by three things – a book called Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage by Anne Lamott, how the light changes the appearance of the sea depending on the time of day, and the 150 studies I created this summer while in Sanya on Hainan Island. In her book, Lamott writes personal essays about how she found revival in the dark times or the seasons of “night” in her life. Here is a quote from the book: “You remember other dark nights of the soul and how by dawn they always broke. You discover that everything helps you learn who you are, and that this is why we are here.” Lamott's writing stuck with me as I painted the South China Sea at different times of day. The transitions in my palette reminded me of the transitions we have been through this past year. The transformation of the water reminded me of how we have all been transformed personally and collectively. It also made me think of all of the artists throughout history that have focused on the subject of light in their work. Artists such as the Impressionists, Caravaggio, Turner, Turrell, or Eliason. I recently saw a collection called Light from the Tate at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai. There were rooms and rooms of art focused just around this one idea and it spanned hundreds of years. For the next two weeks, I will be sending out the EVENTIDE Collection in three sections – dusk, night and dawn - and will pair them with a quote from Lamott’s book. My hope is that this series also brings some peace and reflection to your day. Thanks for following along! #eventide #paintingbythesea #sanya #artcollec
