We thoroughly endorse our Dean’s article in the July edition of Outlook, “Why Liberal Arts?” Often we get questions like “Will we get jobs?”, What are the average packages?”. We have had students getting excellent placements but that’s not the point. The point is that we train students to think critically and to change the world around them. Change makers are valued everywhere.

JSJC remembers Dilip Kumar (1922–2021) on his birth centenary: Born as Mohammed Yusuf Khan in Peshawar in British India (now in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) on 11 December 1922, Dilip Kumar emerged as a leading man in the Hindi film industry in the 1950s. After his debut in ‘Jwar Bhata’ (1944), he found box office success with ‘Jugnu’ (1947), ‘Andaz’ (1949), ‘Aan’ (1952), ‘Daag’ (1952), ‘Devdas’ (1955), and ‘Naya Daur’ (1957). We are delighted to invite you to the final day of the Satyajit Ray Retrospective film festival.

Today’s schedule:
5:00 P.M.: Keynote Address: Pablo Bartholomew
6:30 P.M.: High Tea
7:00 P.M.: Today’s Show: Shatranj Ke Khiladi

Venue: Performing Arts Studio

Keynote address:
Renowned photographer Pablo Bartholomew, who worked with Satyajit Ray, on the sets of Shatranj Ke Khiladi(1977), will deliver the Keynote Address and the 1st JSJC Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture.

Today’s Show: Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977)
The only full-length Hindi/Urdu film Ray made in his career, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, adapted from the eponymous story by Premchand, depicts the lost world of Awadh on the eve of 1857. The film explores many of Ray’s favourite themes — modernity versus tradition, the march of history, a lost world.

The film had a star cast comprising Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Saeed Jaffrey, Farooq Sheikh, Victor Banerjee, Barry John, Farida Jalal, Tom Alter, and Sir Richard Attenborough. Amitabh Bachchan is the narrator of the film.

The film went on to win the National Award for Best Hindi Film, 1978, and Filmfare Award 1979 for Best Film (Critics) and Best Director for Ray.

10/11/2022

Today's show: Mahanagar (1963)
Venue: Performing Arts Studio
Time: 5 P.M.

About the film:
While Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali was praised for its authentic representation of rural Bengal, the director himself was a city man, born and brought up in Calcutta (Kolkata).

Film scholar Amitabha Bhattacharya in his essay, "Satyajit Ray's Calcutta: Friend or Adversary?", writes: "Calcutta appears often as a frame of references, sometimes as an adversary, often in the background and sometimes as dominant." While the city where he lived and worked would feature in many of his films, including the famous Calcutta Trilogy, Mahanagar (The Big City, 1963) was the first film he shot completely in Calcutta.

Adapted from Bengali novelist Narendranath Mitra's short story "Abantika", the film depicts the struggles of an urban, middle-class household. When the daughter-in-law of the family, Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee) takes a job as a salesgirl to make ends meet, it plunges the household into a struggle between tradition and modernity.

The film was well-received both in India and abroad. Critics such as Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert praised the film for its "serene narrative style" and "sensitive performances by cast members". Philip French has described it to be one of Ray's greatest films after the Apu Trilogy.

Today’s Show: Pather Panchali (1955)

The release of Satyajit Ray’s debut Pather Panchali (1955) is considered as a landmark event in the history of Indian cinema. “Nobody knew what had hit them,” says filmmaker Shyam Benegal about watching the film.

Adapted from Bengali novelist Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s eponymous novel, Pather Panchali depicted Bengali rural life and human relations like never before. Inspired by Italian neorealism, Ray shot the film mostly on location and used amateur actors. Pather Panchali went on to win several awards such as Best Human Document at Cannes 1956 and Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 1957. It also won the National Award for Best Film in 1955.

This festival has been organised in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation of India and the National Film Archive of India.
