Here's my story behind this page...

I’m so happy to celebrate my birthday today, but it makes me reflect that Cancer has been an unwanted companion through the decades of my life.

My friend, Tina, died of Leukemia when I was five. My Granny, who survived breast cancer.

My Nana, who died when I was a tween.

My Grandfather died when I was in college, close to my twentieth birthday… only a few years later, I celebrated his daughter—my mom--who survived breast cancer.

Then s**t got too real in my thirties, as I said goodbye to Denise, Donna, Colleen, and Declan--who left far too early in their young lives. I started volunteering with the American Cancer Society, finding some hope and joy in hearing brave stories from survivors.

And then my forties hit, and I cried so much when we lost Susan, Jim, Michele, Ellie, and others after incredible, valiant fights… finding time to celebrate victories of my Dad, my husband Steve, and others as they were diagnosed in their battle against the beast.

Now as my fifties move another year forward, I mourn Jen, Paulette, Julie, Pat… all gone far too soon. Holding on to hope as I see my Mom (again) and friends like Nicole and Cheryl inspire others with their cancer victories.

And that’s really only a portion of my list, because the memories cut deeply. It’s a lot of pain to see, a lot of hands to hold, and a lot of hope to reach for.

We all know this year has been incredibly difficult and rotten for so many. We’ve gone through so much anger and confusion—let’s take a little time to help each other celebrate more birthdays and live cancer-free lives. Here’s what I’m asking…
