📖 long caption alert 📖
One of the biggest advantages to choosing a writing career was so that I could avoid talking about myself. But yesterday, I spent an hour doing just that. // It was one of the proudest moments of my author journey so far to be invited to speak with the network and the lovely — and yet in the minutes leading up to going live, I felt every nerve tingle, lighting up my doubts of self-worth. What could I share that would be worthy of these writers’ precious time? // But as the minutes crept by, a single word continued to flow through my mind: grace. An entire page of prep notes for myself, and that word wasn’t even on it — but as any of you who watched yesterday will know, I repeated that word like a mantra. I may not have deserved the attention yesterday, and yet, people made the decision to listen. I may not have a NYT best seller, and yet, my book is selling. // As I reflected over my entire book journey, sharing the ups and downs of the last 3 years— I was able to step back and see the sheer height of the mountain that I climbed. And I wish I had spent more of the journey giving myself grace rather than critique. The climb is already hard— why hurt yourself more? // If you’re in the middle of a climb, remember to hold on to grace. It will be your rope. It will get you to the top.

3 days ago, I wedged this note into the seam of my title page and dropped off the copy at a Little Free Library just a few minutes from my house. Walked up to it today to find Tom, Jerry B. and Tim still happily there— but Renee was not. 🥹

Yes I’m a writer. I’m also a wife. A mother of two littles. Sometimes, my day is spent at my computer in short bursts of productivity, and other days, it’s spent entirely like this: on hands and knees meticulously sorting Lego as we make memories with our four year old. ✨ Sometimes I just need a reminder that a day does not require a check mark next to a writing goal for it to be successful. One day my book will be on shelves. But one day, my son will stop wanting to build Lego with me on our living room floor. // I think I made the right priorities this weekend. // Swipe for a ghostly Halloween sight.

Sometimes I wish I was a character so I could enjoy the story I’ve created, but not have to do any of the work.

I adhere by the Michael Scott principle when it comes to productivity: I work faster after I’ve stared at memes all afternoon. No, Jan, not by magic, but because I have to… to make up for the all the time I lost.

Frankly— I don’t think we need any other punctuation except the em dash

There’s a reason the people who make the movie don’t make the trailer.

A year ago, I walked out of The Brown Cup coffeeshop in downtown Oceanside after writing the final word of my first novel. It was surreal and anticlimactic all at the same time. Somehow I knew I’d forget how big of a deal this actually was, so I’m grateful to my old-self for giving me this pick me up today.

The writer guilt is real.

But also, I think it needs to be said that this in no way should be seen as the opinion that is a side character.

Ok - I see you. I rarely understand quotes authors use as the preface to a book but this one refuses to be looked over & is straight chilling. I love it. 🌴 Beach read today, which also happens to be and I’s first together. We cute.

Overhauling the prologue, which means a blank slate. Like I’m back to square one. Which is totally fine.
Not scary at all.
Editing is my favorite.

No one else knows this but Tolkien always had writer’s block. It’s how all the best languages get started.

Wow, thank you everyone for the love and support sent yesterday after my ✨book news✨🤍 I often feel ridiculous on social media, thinking up different ways to engage people with my writing and yesterday, y’all just really filled me up. Final edits from my editor come back today, and I can’t wait to dive in and put the final touches on this little baby of mine before the human one comes out next month.

✨NEWS✨
Not only do I get to reveal the latest (maybe final??) cover of my debut novel, BUT I get to brag on a particularly incredible man who sneakily found my book file while I napped (hello, third trimester), copied it to his computer and worked for who knows how long to re-format it & print this very first, limited edition. 🥹 I finished writing the first draft on July 10th of last year, and then had all these lofty dreams to print and distribute by the following summer. I still am pursuing this goal, so stay tuned for publication date coming soon, but all I truly wanted was to hold my book in my hand a year after I wrote it. 📚 Best surprise ever.
