Be very careful with adding weights like this particularly if you’re new to lifting weights or if you’ve had bouts of low back pain in the past. It puts a lot of stress on individual vertebrae in the spine and often leads to a compensation of lumbar extension. From research, we know that certain muscle groups are inhibited due to low back pain (even after you move longer have the pain anymore) and unless those muscles are facilitated, compensations will continue to occur and you will stay at a higher risk of injury to your lower back. As Doctors of Physical Therapy, we focus on segmental stability of each vertebrae with particular focus on the facilitation of multifidi muscle groups to ensure proper form and lower the risk of injury.
