Dave’s Hot Chicken-$-South Bend, IN
📸Sliders with Cheese Fries; Slider and Tender; Kale Slaw; Top-Loaded Oreo Shake; Mac and Cheese

“College Game Day” is rolling into town tomorrow for the Notre Dame vs. Ohio State match up, and whether you are getting up early to get a chance to be seen on TV with your clever cardboard creation or you are gearing up for a gigantic tailgate, you are gonna need some food 🍗. And now that Dave’s Hot Chicken has set up shop in Eddy Street Commons, you won’t have to go far to find some pre-game grub. Now don’t start hating if you don’t like spice. Dave’s has seven levels of heat from No Spice to Reaper so there’s no reason to let your pepper 🌶️ prejudice hold you back from placing an order. And you will be pleasantly surprised at the large portions of crispy, juicy chicken that Dave’s is serving up. What Dave’s calls a tender is more like a fillet, and when that tender goes on a soft, warm bun, they call it a Slider, but it’s actually the size of what other chains call a sandwich. They keep it simple with those two offerings and three side choices of crinkle-cut fries, mac & cheese, and kale slaw, which were all super tasty. And to keep that large-portion theme going, the Top-Loaded Oreo Shake lived up to its name, with an over abundance of cookies crushed on top of a creamy vanilla shake. Ranch lovers take note: it’s BYOB for you since Dave’s Sauce is the ONLY kind they serve, but the mildly spicy mayonnaise-based blend is a perfectly complementary condiment for the chicken. They also offer several options of Hot Boxes to feed all your tailgating friends or to keep you fueled for a long day of cheering on your favorite team🏈

Studebagels- South Bend, IN- $
📸Hashbrown Smash Bagel with one egg and avocado
🥯We’ve never met a bagel place we didn’t like! South Bend Chocolate Company’s recent business addition is serving up homemade bagel sandwiches made to order. The hashbrown smash bagel had a cheesy flavor and the bacon was high quality. I added avocado because why not, but their avocado is guacamole (personal pet peeve). Their sandwiches normally come with 3 eggs, but I reduced to one egg for personal preference. The interior is minimalist and offers a retail storefront for their chocolate products. I searched everywhere for a Lox bagel and theirs is only on the lunch menu! We will have to return for ultimate lox bagel sandwich, The Lorax.

El Cantarito-$$-La Porte, IN
📸Tacos De Birria; Steak Fajitas; Raspberry Margarita; Chips & Salsa; Grilled Shrimp Tacos; Queso Dip & Guacamole; Pork Taco and Chicken Burrito

When someone tells me they found a new place with great margaritas, you better believe I will prioritize a visit ASAP. So after a dinner party where some guests were raving about the margs at El Cantarito in La Porte, we decided to start our weekend early there one Friday with lunch. Situated in a strip mall not far from Pine Lake, the interior is spacious with a large bar area and booths in the dining area adorned with warm, sparkly string lights. But the first problem…no margaritas on the menu. No tabletop flip cards with flavors. No mention of tequila anywhere. Was this the spot with legendary libations or were we in the wrong place? Granted it was lunch, but according to Jimmy Buffett is was 5 o’clock somewhere, right? After asking the server, she did confirm that both on the rocks and frozen versions were available and then proceeded to list the 7 or so flavors. I chose frozen raspberry, and unlike many frozen margs I’ve had, this one did NOT skimp on the tequila, and the result was a well-balanced drink that tasted more like a cocktail and less like a Slurpee. The lunch specials were incredibly tasty and incredibly reasonable, including Steak Fajitas for $8. The Tacos De Birria, according to the taco snob I was dining with, were an excellent version, with the crispy shells dipped in the rich consommé with some more consommé on the side for additional dipping. The Shrimp Tacos were plump and fresh with big slices of avocado to top them off, and the freshness theme continued in the guacamole and the salsa we scooped up with multiple baskets of hot chips. Looking forward to a return visit to try another marg flavor (passion fruit?) and the extended options on the dinner menu.

King Crab-$$$-Mishawaka, IN
📸Boil with Snow Crab and Black Mussels; Mai Tai; Spicy Honey Wings with Sweet Potato Fries; Hushpuppies; Crab Rangoons

In a former life, I am sure I was a New Englander. My deep love of all things crab, clams, mussels, and pretty much all edible crustaceans had to have been honed somewhere other than the oceanless Midwest, which is why I am so thrilled by the recent proliferation of restaurants specifically focused on my boiled and buttered seafood desires. King Crab has taken up residence in the former TGI Fridays in Mishawaka, and they have spent some coin to turn the place into a cool version of what Captain Nemo’s man cave might have looked like, adding plenty of nautical decor while retaining the bar and TVs. A cocktail menu is available, so we started with a Mai Tai, which was a tart and tasty monochromatic version of this classic, and we paired it with the Crab Rangoons and Hushpuppies. The puppies were fine, a standard offering from the freezer to the fryer, but the Rangoons were disappointing. Everything you would want from this app, most importantly the smooth and savory crab and cream cheese filling, was missing, and we were left with thick wonton triangles with nothing inside. We ordered the Spicy Honey Wings with Sweet Potato Fries, and like the Hushpuppies, were hot and crunchy, but the wings were neither spicy nor sweet. While the description said they were “non-breaded” they also arrived non-seasoned and non-sauced. We did politely ask if we were missing the sauce, and our server explained to us that “non-breaded” meant no sauce. We decided to create our own boil and chose snow crab clusters and black mussels in the Tangy Special Blend. It arrived at our table in the usual steam-filled plastic bag, and while the seafood was properly cooked, it had not spent much time boiling in the house sauce. None of the components, including the corn and potatoes, had absorbed any of the richness of the butter or the spice of the blend. We ended up taking most of it home (because no seafood-loving Midwesterner leaves crab legs behind) and it was a better dish a day later after it sat in the sauce overnight.

Vinyl Tap and Table-$$-Mishawaka, IN
📸Korean Glazed Brussels Sprouts; Shotgun Truffle Fried Chicken Sandwich; Potato Fritters; Jumbo Wings with BBQ Sauce

If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would dine at a particular restaurant specifically to taste their Brussels sprouts, I would have thought Ashton Kutcher was showing up to punk me (although Kutcher has not Punk’d anyone on television since 2007). Brussels sprouts as destination dining??? No way! But that is exactly what another table of diners shared with us on our recent trip to Vinyl Tap and Table, a music-themed, diner-vibe establishment in downtown Mishawaka. As they were passing our table on the way to theirs, they stopped to admire our Potato Fritters, a larger-than-life and ultra-bougie version of a tater tot, stuffed with rosemary and goat cheese, and accompanied by a killer house made ranch dressing. They asked if we had been there before (we had not) and if we had tried the Brussels sprouts (we had just placed our order for them) because they had heard they were amazing and they were there to try them. Like us, I am sure they were not disappointed. The Korean Glazed Brussels Sprouts were indeed a top-of-the charts version of this trendy app, soaked in honey chili sauce with big chunks of crispy bacon. Unlike other versions I have had, it was clear these sprouts had spent some time getting to know the other ingredients because every nook and cranny had locked in the sauce and bits of bacon to create a tender bite-sized explosion of sweet, salty and spicy. The “jumbo” wings, which may be a little hyperbolic, were meatier and larger than ones I’ve been getting recently at larger chains, and came with just enough sauce that you could still taste the actual chicken. They also came with the aforementioned ranch dressing, so BONUS! The Shotgun Truffle Fried Chicken Sandwich was huge, hot and crispy, with pepper jack, pickled vegetables, spicy ranch, a a beautiful runny yolk egg which always sounds delicious on the menu but ends up having a mind of its own, migrating off your sandwich, onto your face and hand and down the front of your shirt. Not that this has ever happened to me😁

Blockhead Beerworks- Valparaiso, IN
📸Crab Rangoon Potstickers, Should Have Been a Cowboy roll, Humble Pig Pho, and the Fried Rice of the Week
Look at that sushi art! Not a bad bite this whole meal. The crab Rangoon potstickers were sweet and crunchy. The sushi roll had bacon that made it special. The pho broth had a lot of flavor and the brussel sprouts were a great addition. The fried rice of the week with filet and shrimp had so much flavor for a fried rice. Not a single boring dish here! (And they’re open for lunch too.)

No. 6 Scratch Kitchen-$$$-South Bend, IN
📸Brisket Biscuit; Beef Bourguignon; Beer & Cocktail; Fig and Goat Cheese Jar; Mediterranean Airline Chicken

Six things you need to know about No. 6 Scratch Kitchen:
1. It’s adorable! Set in an old firehouse on the edge of downtown, it classy, quaint, and intimate.
2. Don’t take the kids! This is only for 21+.
3. Go thirsty. The wine and cocktail menu is lengthy, creative and very affordable. The cocktail I had, which I believe was a key lime martini, was delicious and a bargain for $8.
4. The service was super friendly. Our waitress was so knowledgeable and so attentive without being intrusive. Perfect service!
5. Go hungry because the food is not only incredible, it also comes in gigantic portions. The Brisket Biscuit, which was listed as a shareable, was a meal all on its own, with a huge buttery drop biscuit filled with tender brisket and tangy melted cheddar. We love anything with goat cheese so we had to try the jar and though it was missing the advertised baguette that was supposed to accompany it, the substituted naan still let the sweet and savory cheese mixture be the star. The airline chicken tasted nothing like any airline food I’ve ever had, as it was nicely seasoned and joined by a zesty lemony couscous.
6. Make reservations. Word is spreading about the food here, and since the space is small you don’t want to be disappointed by a long wait or a full evening.

Old Style Deli-$-Elkhart, IN
📸Eggsclusive Club; Chocolate Sprinkle Cookie; Fried Cauliflower; Iced Lemon Cookie; Too Rich to See

If you’re like me, lunch is usually not my best meal of the day. Sometimes I pack a healthy offering or some tasty leftovers that won’t be completely nuked to oblivion by the office microwave. Other days it’s whatever scraps I can find in the office break room or my desk drawers. But some days I do treat myself to a leisurely lunch outside of the confines of my office walls, and when I do, it’s always worth the trip to Old Style Deli. Their massive menu that covers almost every inch of wall space with their punny and funny names for the sandwiches is worth the stop on its own, and the food is just as good as they describe it. I love their egg salad club, with its tangy and creamy egg salad on wheat, and no matter what protein you prefer, or if you prefer none, there is something here that will please everyone. They also have some solid fried app choices, like the cauliflower with dill sauce, and their cookie and dessert bar options were soft and freshly made. Trust me, you will want to make a lunch trip here. That cake leftover from your co-worker’s retirement party will still be in the break room tomorrow.

Tosi’s-$$$-Stevensville, MI
📸 Gorgonzola Wedge; Soup of the Day; Lavender Blackberry Martini; Toasted Ravioli; Scallopini; Walleye

Tosi’s is a paradox. It has a lovely location and setting in Stevensville, but the walk from the entrance to our table took us through several rooms that ranged from lodgy wilderness bar to well-appointed yet dated Tuscan cafe. The wedge salad was fresh and crunchy with delicious housemade dressing, but the toasted ravioli was anything but toasted and lacked any crispiness and flavor. The wine list was nice and I had a lovely glass of Riesling, but the cocktails were unbalanced and super sweet. Our entrees all came with nice protein selections, but the sauces were thick and gummy and the plating and sides gave them a very frozen-entree feel. And to really add to the contradiction of the evening meal, we had very friendly and attentive service, but every time food was delivered to our table the server would make a tongue-in-cheek joke like “I bet that really tastes awful” and “That really looks bad, doesn’t it?” Because we never send food back or make comments about the food while we are eating, it made it all the more strange. We just laughed along, but we were silently disappointed that the server wasn’t exactly wrong.

Pizza Transit-$-Niles, MI
📸 Cinnamon Sticks; Gyro Pizza; Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza; Twisted Breadsticks; Ultimate Pizza

Pizza might be one of the most divisive dishes in our country. I’m not even talking about the age-old arguments over the location where it’s made or the thickness or shape of the crust, of which there are several dedicated pages and posts on those topics. I’m talking about toppings and the passive or maybe sometimes aggressive decisions we all have to make when we decide who to dine with when we want to get a pizza. I personally try to avoid the “only cheese” or “all meat” crowd when I want to share some slices, while I’m sure I’m on some “do not call” lists for others who aren’t down for pineapple or hot honey on their pies. But during the most recent version of Restaurant Week in Niles, Pizza Transit solved the problem: a pizza flight! For $22 we had three medium pizzas of our choice, and all was right with the world. Could we have done this before on our own? Probably. But when you put the word “flight” after anything it creates a sense of bougie and bonding that you just don’t get with a single separate order. And the pizza were all delicious! Pizza Transit has fresh and generous toppings of the staples you expect with some creative combinations like the Gyro Pizza. The breadsticks were incredibly delicious with a buttery crunch and the cinnamon sticks had great flavor and caramelization of the sugar and cinnamon. You can get carry out or delivery, but I would suggest dining in at their downtown location to see some of the interesting oddities that decorate the walls. I believe the flight was just a special for that week, but I hope they put it on their regular menu so the average and the adventurous pizza connoisseurs can continue to eat together in harmony ☮️❤️🍕😊

Woochi-$$$-South Bend, IN
Vegetable Tempura; Scallion Pancake; Ginger Salad; Sake Cosmo; Volcano Roll & Sweet Potato Roll; Cheesecake Crème Brûlée

When out for a night on the town in South Bend, the allure of the dark, chic and clubby vibe of Woochi is hard to resist. Add to the fact that it is one of the few stalwart sushi restaurants in the city, and its primo location just down from the Morris makes it an obvious choice if you’re catching a show after dinner. Once inside and seated, we were a little disappointed with the interior, as it has seen better days, but the food was respectable. We started with the tempura, which was a generous portion of hot and crunchy veggies with an especially savory sauce. We had never tried scallion pancakes and though they didn’t wow us with the presentation, they were soft and flavorful with two nice sauce accompaniments. The cocktail was well balanced and chilled, as was the salad. The sushi here rarely disappoints, and the two rolls we had were just what we were hoping for. If you’ve never tried a sweet potato roll, this is the place to do it, as the potato was cooked to the perfect texture. The Volcano roll arrived with a real flame and had a great blend of sauces on the top. The dessert was somewhat misleading as the name implied we were getting crème brûlée with a cheesecake flavor when what we actually got was cheesecake flavored like crème brûlée, and since it didn’t have the satisfying crack of caramelized sugar on the top to bring the fun and the texture, we were disappointed. The service, however, was fast and friendly which made it a great place to fill up before heading off to our Broadway show.

Tossed To Go-$-South Bend, IN
📸Taco Salad; Chef Mike’s Signature Salad; Pretzel Bites; Snickerdoodle; Corn Cake

While the word “salad” may not be one that normally gets your taste buds uber excited, they might feel differently once they have tried one from Tossed To Go. The menu offers a large range of chef-created options, as well as the ability to create your own lettuce-based masterpiece. We tried Chef Mike’s Signature, which featured house-made cashew brittle, dried cranberries, pears, blue cheese, and raspberry vinaigrette. The combination was fresh and delicious, with the contrast in flavors and textures between the crisp, sweet pears and the tangy blue cheese, but the star of the show was the brittle. While there wasn’t as much of it on my salad as I would have liked, it was crunchy and buttery and a nice complement to the other toppings. Luckily, you can purchase the brittle a la carte just for snacking, so that will definitely be part of my next order. The Taco Salad was colorful and full of fresh, chunks of avocado and served with a nice hint-of-spice dressing. We got Pretzel Bites for a starter, and they were a great carb addition to the lunch with creamy beer cheese for dipping. We also tried a corn cake, which looked like an undersized corn muffin, but was super moist and more of a sweet twist on traditional cornbread. We also tried a snickerdoodle cookie, which was huge and big enough to share and came with lots of cinnamon and sugar caramelized on top. This place is strictly a carry-out establishment, which is kind of a bummer because the inside is very cute and inviting with warm navy blue cabinetry that holds several additional treats for impulse purchases, but still room for a few tables (hint, hint!)

Aftermath Cidery & Winery-$-Valparaiso, IN
📸Pot of Gold; Pot of Gold, Sour Apple Shamrock, Shamrock Martini, Leprechaun Mimosa

You don’t need the luck of the Irish or a pot of gold to score this flight of adorable little cider cocktails from Aftermath. For just $12 you can get a generous sample of all four of their St. Patty’s Day themed drinks, and all four were fun and tasty. Our favorite was the Pot of Gold with the sweet and sour Airhead rainbow 🌈 garnish. The Derecho cider mixed with tropical flavors of pineapple and coconut was smooth and nicely balanced. If you’re looking for something a little less sweet, the Leprechaun Mimosa is an excellent choice. The sit-and-stay-awhile vibe of this place, complete with a selection of board games, makes it a great spot for taking your time, grabbing some snacks, and sampling some creative concoctions.

Industrial Revolution Eatery & Grille-$$-Valparaiso, IN
📸Welded Nachos; Opportunity Pizza; Nutberry Salad; Boat-Tie Cajun Shrimp Pasta

I love a good theme, especially when that theme is carried out with an all-in, go-big-or-go-home kind of vigor, which is why I find myself making several return visits to Industrial Revolution. Imagine a place where your 8th Grade Social Studies class (bios of manufacturing heroes from the 1800s adorn the tables) and an 8-year old’s birthday party (electric train circles the restaurant from an overhead track) come together in an cosmic bang that also produces some creative and delicious menu offerings, and this is the restaurant that you get. Pot roast is the featured item here, which adds to the theme and uniqueness, and you can get it on burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, or as its own entree. We tired the pizza version, which came tender and juicy on a nice crispy crust with pepperoncinis, blue cheese and cheddar jack. The nachos were delicious with BBQ sauce and pulled pork and kept the Americana theme going with red, white, and blue chips. The pasta, which comes on a shrimp or chicken version, had a flavorful yet not too spicy Cajun kick, and, of course, a Stars and Stripes garnish. The servers provide not only great service but a short history lesson on the featured industrialist of the day, and the life-sized steelworkers that sit on the edge of the roof and the contrast of brick and steel throughout give this place a warm neighborhood vibe that makes you want to keep coming back for the food, the fun, and the historical facts.

Bit of Swiss Pastry Shoppe-$-Stevensville, MI
📸Salted Butterscotch Trifle, Cinnamon Roll and Croissant; Seven Sisters; Cheesecake Brownie

Since you are probably now in the final stages of your self-induced Paczki coma from today, we thought we’d give you one final dose of sugar and butter by sharing pics from our first visit to Bit of Swiss. Here’s what we learned on our initial trip. 1. Get there early. We bought way more than we needed late in the day from half-empty cases after waiting in line with other slackers like ourselves to get the last of the goods. I can only imagine what wonders existed there when the doors opened in the morning. 2. You know that rule about not going to the grocery store when you’re hungry because you’ll buy more? Yeah, that rule is null and void here because this place is so stinking cute that you will be mesmerized by the Bavarian architecture and the adorably friendly staff and you will leave with things you didn’t even know you wanted. But once you get them to the car and get to eating, you won’t regret a single purchase. The salted butterscotch trifle was addictive and layered with complex yet complementary textures and flavors. The cheesecake brownie incited a “don’t make me pull this car over” moment to wrestle it away from my companions in the back seat. The croissant was so buttery and flaky that it had me picking the crumbs off my seat and putting them in my mouth with one hand while attempting to successfully operate a moving vehicle with the other. I’ve never actually been to Switzerland but if this is what a bit of it is like, then I’m digging out my passport 🇨🇭

Shoreline Brewery-$$-Michigan City, IN📸Chicken & Biscuit; Coccoli; Warm Goat Cheese Fritter & Granny Smith Apple; Veggie Blue; Pepperoni Pizza

Does Shoreline serve great beer? Of course they do, and I’ve had it on the many occasions I have been there, but after consuming large quantities of the amazing dishes on their menu, it’s usually a food hangover I suffer from and not the beer. While the words “fried” and “salad” are not often paired together, the fried goat cheese salad is fantastic, and I’m completely addicted to the combination of the crunchy and tangy fritters with candied walnuts and the honey lavender vinaigrette. The coccoli was an offering I’ve never seen on a menu before, but they were a tasty mixture of textures and flavors that made a nice and not-too-heavy appetizer. The Veggie Blue was a fabulous gluten-free riff on nachos with crispy root vegetable chips. The Chicken & Biscuit was much more complex than its name with apple jalapeño slaw, pickled cucumber and a extra crunchy waffle version of sweet potato fries with maple chipotle aioli. The outdoor space here was expanded recently to serve an even larger crowd at this popular space located right between the outlet mall and the beach, but you don’t have to wait for a sunny day or super sale prices to find a reason to head to Shoreline for a great meal.

Uptown Kitchen-$$-Granger, IN
📸 Avocado Toast; Morning Marg; Your Scramble with Potatoes; Buttermilk Pancake; Sausage Gravy & Biscuits

Is it really any wonder why brunch has become one of our favorite weekend activities? No other meal allows you the flexibility to eat it in the AM or PM, offers both sweet and savory options AND makes it socially acceptable to day drink. What’s not to love? Add the vibrant, yet laid back vibe of Uptown Kitchen in Heritage Square and you have a delicious and relaxing start to any morning. The pancakes, a true test of any good brunch place, were golden and fluffy with just the right crispness on the edges. The avocado toast was a warm spring day on the plate and almost too pretty to eat, but when we did each bite was a nice burst of berries on top of creamy avocado and crunchy pumpkin seeds. The bread was sliced thick, but we would have liked it toasted just a little bit more to hold up under the weight of all the toppings. The scramble was hot, fresh and made to order, and the potatoes were beautifully seasoned. The Morning Marg was a tequila-topped twist on a mimosa, and it was light and refreshing. Next time we will go a little later in the day to try one of the eye-popping desserts they offer on their bakery cases.

Zing Japanese Fusion-$$-Mishawaka, IN
📸:Awesome Roll, Dragon Roll & Zing Roll; Pineapple Fusion; Coconut Prawns;
Crab Rangoon; Side Salad

If you haven’t been to downtown Mishawaka lately, you are missing out on the beautiful new Riverwalk area and revitalization, including the addition of new shops and eateries. Zing may be an OG in this wave of new businesses, but they are showing their staying power by offering some beautiful cocktails and delectable sushi rolls. The sheer number of menu options is a little overwhelming, but we managed to whittle down our choices to three rolls which were all made right in front of us at the sushi counter and were fresh and tasty. The Pineapple Fusion was one of just many creative cocktails on the menu, and it arrived ice cold and perfectly balanced. The space is packed a little tight with lots of tables that are usually full, so quiet, romantic date night is definitely not the theme here, but if solid sushi offerings and quality Japanese entrees are what you crave, then you won’t mind the other happy diners 🍱

📸Seoul Juice (Gin, Electric Blue Seoul Matcha Syrup, Blueberry, Coconut, Lemon)
📸Lifes Berry Good slushy (mezcal, blackberry puree, lemon, pamplemousse, marjoram honey)

Weekend brunch is almost here! We finally made it to Beatnik (West Town location) and had an unforgettable meal. The patatas bravas & caviar was plated beautifully; however, the moroccan pastilla that followed it was our favorite dish, a meat stuffed pastry spiced with cinnamon and finished with powdered sugar. The meat was the consistency of brisket and was one of the best dishes we have ever had. The Bresaola breakfast sandwich had the softest scrambled egg on it. I found the shakshuka to be pretty standard. But the ponzu scallops! The coconut milk was to die for with the lime. The avocado shatta from the all the mezze platter was gone in a second. By far the best thing on the platter. The Seoul Juice and the Lifes Berry Good slushy were flawless. Nothing about either of them could have been better. Craving moroccan pastilla and cannot wait to go back!

Plank’s Tavern On The Water-&&$-St. Joseph, MI
📸Fried Brussels; Tavern Ribs; Fish & Chips; Old Harbor Wings; Pan Roasted Sea Bass; Seafood Stew; Orange Glazed Duck; Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf; PEI Mussels; Big Ass Everything Pretzel

Plank’s is located just inside of the beautifully-appointed Inn at Harbor Shores, which is convenient for diners who might need a little nap after consuming such a delicious, clean-your-plate, no-food-left-behind meal. The portions are generous, and the menu is loaded with lots of tempting offerings so prepare to partake in multiple courses. The pretzel lived up to its name and came with three unique and tasty dipping options. The Brussels went beyond the typical offering with the sweet and savory addition of the raspberry ale cheese. The entrees were all above average with the standouts being the spicy seafood stew (it had a more formal name that I cannot remember now) that was that night’s special, and the sea bass which came on a bed of creamy jalapeño corn risotto that was amazing and paired perfectly with the fish. We’ve never stayed at the inn, but next time we dine there, we will get a room and make a night of it so we can see if brunch there is just as yummy as dinner.
