Clone wars! At Carbon Starts we always prefer to start trees from seed if possible with the goal of selecting for locally adapted traits.
However, the reality is that some tree species just have too much genetic variability from one generation to the next. The only way to get the desirable traits from the original tree is to make a genetic copy of it.
Or, in the case of Ginkgo biloba, the males are excellent high quality trees. The females grow and drop fruit that is extremely messy and smells foul. Clones are taken to ensure that all the trees are male.
Most people donβt realize that a large percentage of the trees in our lives are clones.
So, how hard is it to clone a tree? Read the last picture to see what the magnolia protocol is. π
Thank you to everyone that helped support the pilot season of Carbon Starts! Not only was it successful, but we sold out of all the trees we planned to sell 4 weeks early. We will be holding back the rest of the oaks to sell as 2 year old trees next year.
We are now in the process of scaling up and diversifying. Next year we hope to have seedlings/2 year old oaks along with several other tree species.
Follow along as Carbon Starts grows like a tree!

Ever wonder how much carbon an oak tree can sequester? This tree is about 100 years old and has sequestered something like 60,000 lbs of carbon dioxide so far.
We wonder who planted it and if this is their last remaining legacy?
What will your legacy be like?

Have you guys ever smelled a big mature Ponderosa pine? mmm...butterscotch!
How much carbon do you think this tree has stored? πͺ
