Spinach in this week's CSA box!!
I have the peas to thank for providing daily afternoon shade, allowing the spinach to stay crunchy and delicious, right through last week's heat wave! π
Last pic: the homely veggie roast - when I take all the ugly and misshapen crops collected during CSA harvest and stick them into the oven π
A week of beginnings and endings...
Summer solstice marks the end of our lengthening days, but also the start of the CSA (weekly veggie boxes)!
Here on the farm, it's the end of ultra long days spent in the garden, not knowing what day of the week it is, and interacting with almost zero human beings.
It's the beginning of more structured weeks, actually posting on social media, and regular socializing with all my lovely CSA members. I'm going to miss all that unstructured time, but I'm so excited to see you all! ππ
Back inside looking like a drowned rat, but feeling SO MUCH BETTER than I have in the last few days of crushing heat!!
I'll take transplanting in the wet and mud over getting slowly broiled any day!

A bit of plastic between the wind, the snow, and the sub zero temperatures - that's all these babies need to stay alive and keep photosynthesizing through a blustery April.
I talk a lot about vegetable plants' comparative weakness to their tougher, wild cousins who can carve out their lives without my anxious coddling...but really, who am I to make comparisons when I still haven't put away my long johns and my extra thick wool socks π¬
PLANT SALE!! π±π±π±π±
Order your plants for pick up in mid-May (Toronto and Quinte West).

basil (Genovese, Thai, Tulsi)
bee balm
catnip
lavender
mint
oregano
parsley
rosemary
sage
thyme
tomatoes
peppers
eggplant
Grafting tomatoes as a beginner feels like insanity to me -
Wait, so to have better tomatoes, I have to behead these tomatoes and then mash their heads onto the headless necks of these other tomatoes?!?! π²π²π²
Graduating the celeriac from baby soil blocks to grown-up soil blocks!
Limited heated space in the spring means that I pot up plants that don't normally get potted up. It's so much more space efficient to germinate and grow 500 teeny celeriac plants in two trays and move them to bigger soil blocks in ten trays when there's theoretically* more space in the greenhouse.
*This works better on years when it's not still super cold in April π
It gets seriously windy out here, and until my baby trees get tall enough to do the job, it's up to the windbreak netting to protect the garden!
Full disclosure: I had some lovely peeps helping this weekend - I definitely did not pound all the t-posts in by myself while on crutches...just some π
J: Where did you put my slippers?
H: They're on the bench, behind the sun.
(The growlights are so bright that we have seriously discussed wearing sunglasses to dinner.)
Chickens and ducks are out, seedling tables are in!
Flipping the greenhouse from winter housing for the birds to growing space for the season has always been a gargantuan task...until this year, I did a wildly innovative thing and got help π
Coming soon...potted plants for sale! π±π

It took a bit of fiddling, but I finally found the best configuration for elevating an injured foot AND potting up plants! Now if only my metatarsals grew as quickly as my plants π

ONIONS AND CARROTS FOR SALE π₯π§
Pick up at farm gate (Quinte West) or in downtown Toronto.
More info/order form: https://luminousgroundfarm.com
Storage crops are never as flashy as a quart of tomatoes in high summer, but let it be known that 96% of the time, I would choose onions over tomatoes (the other 4% is when I'm craving a good tomato sandwich).
P.S. CSA 2022 registration is coming soon π
The kitchen takeover continues!
The growing season begins...in the kitchen! π±π±π±

Thinking about veg, but also about how much dust there was in that carpet I took out π

Whoops, it's winter already?
We've been very busy over the last few months doing work,
as in expending work energy (W),
as in W = F x d,
as in we applied force (F) over distance (d) on objects,
as in a lot of material on the farm got moved around,
as in we hauled a lot of compost, woodchips and dirt,
as in we now have a 100% no-dig garden and a second pond!
Special thanks to Robbin from RB's Excavating, my faithful raking and shoveling team, and Duncan the tractor π
