Making Your Child’s School a Prestige School

A lot of parents are still sulking or planning court action because their child did not place in a “prestige” school. While it is okay to be all up in your feelings, here are some tips that will help your child wherever they are placed:

1. Head down to the school during the first week and introduce yourself to the form teacher. Tell her/him about any special gifts or challenges your child might have. Give them permission to correct your child with love. Exchange phone numbers

2. Make sure your child has all their school things. If money is hard, ensure they have writing paper, maths and English texts and games clothes. You may have to make a special visit to explain to each subject teacher that it will take you a while to get everything and you would appreciate if they can accommodate your child in the interim. It is not the responsibility of your 11 year old to explain these matters- teachers are usually willing to photocopy pages and worksheets once they know you are trying. You say nothing, you send no books - they think you do not care.

3. Get a copy of the timetable and help your child pack for school for the first few weeks. They are moving from having all their books every day to subjects on different days, so oversee the process until they get the hang of it.

4. Set aside a quiet space for keeping books and doing homework. Even if your house is small, your eating table cleared with the TV off is good enough. A cardboard box covered with pretty paper and pushed under the bed holds books when not in use.

5. Help your child create a study schedule that includes time for homework plus study. Check homework whether you understand it or not. The least you can do is check for 10 answers if they had 10 questions. Hover around as the lessons are being done. Sign the homework if the school allows.

6. Attend PTA meetings and volunteer to help the school. It may be via fundraiser, getting people to come in and talk with the class, offering to keep the field cut, whatever you can. Prestige school parents are all up in the school business . Get to know the other parents and form a network

7. When the teacher makes a request, do not tell the child, “Miss ent tired ask for thing” Miss is working for your child and so must you.

8. Feed your child the best food you can. A hard working brain needs beans, oily fish, vegetables and complex carbs.

9. Get to know their new friends. Give lifts if you drive, chat on the phone with frequent callers; mingle at school events. If there are any friends you do not think is good company, keep them extra close so that your child can see their true colors which will always come out.

10. Attend all your children’s events if you can. You can be bored and tired but they will only remember you being there and super proud of their achievements.

11. Try to keep your home environment as calm as possible. Man and woman drama is especially hard on teenagers who act out at school because they cannot articulate their hurt feelings. If the parents are separated and have moved on, swallow your pride and pain and cooperate fully- you just need to hold it together until 5th or 6th form

12. Give your child chores, even at test time. This will make them more efficient users of time and more responsible

13. Get them involved in a hobby. Young people are energetic and curious- the devil finds work for idle hands, vaginas and pen*ses. You want to keep them so busy that they have no time for foolishness.

14. Talk with your child every day. Ask questions that require full answers . “ How was your day?” does not give the same answer as “What was the most interesting thing you learnt today?”

15. Send the form teacher a gift at the end of the school year. It can be a handwritten note from the child, a card, a pretty notebook, some whiteboard markers, a pair of earrings, some hand cream , nothing fancy. I still have notes 20 plus years old in my treasure box. It is not a bribe, prestige school teachers get lots of gifts just because they look out for people’s masterpieces.

The truth is that prestige schools are only so because the teachers and parents work tirelessly together for the good of the kids. If you add your effort to that of other parents all around the country, eventually every school will be a prestige one. The ball is in your court , get cracking
