Bringing GEOSCIENCES to your classroom

The project "Bringing GEOSCIENCES to your classroom" was carried out for the third time by the AAPG Suriname Student Chapter and AAPG Young Professionals Suriname Chapter on Friday, 10th February, 2023.

We are grateful for the warm welcome and opportunity given by Christelijke Havo. It has been an amazing experience and it gives us immense joy to see the students getting motivated and inspired.

On the 8th of March on the International Women's Day, the AAPG Suriname Student Chapter is delighted to organize a talk entitled: 'Empowerment of women and girls in the oil and gas industry.' We are pleased to inform you that this talk will be held, Zeudi Sontohartono MSc. The Senior Exploration Geologist will share her expierences in the sector of minging and exploration and sharing insights about her life as a geologist within the industry. On Saturday 21st January, 2023 SPE Suriname and AAPG Young Professionals Suriname collaborated on a technical talk titled "SPE Suriname planning and collaboration with AAPG Suriname: Geological updates on Suriname's offshore potential". The event's main speaker was Mr. Patrick Brunings, who is the SPE Chair in addition to serving as the Exploration & Non Operated Ventures Asset Manager for our local oil company Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V.

Sunaina Mohan , President of the AAPG YP Suriname, welcomed everyone to the event with some opening remarks after which AAPG Suriname Student Chapter President, Shaniel Ramdhani, continued as the master of the ceremony of the event. Patrick Brunings then began the technical talk, providing the audience with geological insights into the Suriname offshore blocks.

On November 22nd, 2022, the AAPG YP Suriname held their second earth science guest lecture, titled "Bringing GEOSCIENCES to your classroom", at the local school Surinaams Pedagogisch Instituut (SPI). This session elaborated on the fundamentals of geosciences in relation to our natural resources.

That day, the following subjects were discussed:
• Interior and structure of the Earth
• Plate tectonics
• The rock cycle

At SPI, the students are trained to become teachers. The session was very interactive and it is clear that there will be some very cool and passionate geology teachers in the future.

On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, Minister Steven Mac Andrew of Labour, Employment, and Youth Affairs met with the president of the AAPG YP Suriname, Ms. Sunaina Mohan, to talk about collaboration, innovation and maintenance. During this meeting, Ms. Sunaina Mohan briefed the minister on the organization's plans and both parties discussed how to form a partnership aimed at informing and preparing the young Surinamese community for the opportunities that the oil and gas industry holds and will provide.

Since the mission of the AAPG YP Suriname is to prepare young geoscientists for specialized jobs in the oil and gas industry, Mohan decided it would be beneficial to speak with the Ministry of Labor Employment and Youth Affairs to determine how to carry out this mission.

The Minister told the president of the AAPG YP Suriname Chapter about the preparations of the "Labour Market Alignment with New Industries" project, which aims to provide job seekers with training that is specific to the demands of the production sector, including the oil and gas industry. Apart from young scientists, all young people in the working population will be extensively informed about the oil and gas industry and other new production sectors, according to the minister. They will be made aware, in particular, of new jobs requiring specific skills and new opportunities for entrepreneurship. The ministry and its team will develop specific training and guidance programs in collaboration with the oil and gas industry and other production sectors.
