The Story of Dj JPQ

The Story of DJ JPQ

Born to the storm of a tempestuous Thanksgiving night, seven weeks premature, in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada - DJ JPQ, then known only by his birth name Jason Parker Quinton. Like most babies, upon entering this world, he lacked access to a turntable. Due to the tireless work of skilled doctors DJ JPQ managed to transcend the Infant ICU of St. Boniface Hospital and eventually grew into an infant that was capable of crawling over to his parent’s state of the art hi-fi system and robust record collection. An early favourite of this curious nascent audiophile was Leon Redbone’s On The Track, due largely to it’s colourful cover art by master animator Chuck Jones. DJ JPQ’s mother will assert that his attraction to sound may have been due to her attendance of concerts by the Doobie Brothers while he was still a fetus floating in amniotic limbo, and that his being born early was due to her twirling in third trimester ecstacy to Odetta’s legendary performance of “Hit Or Miss” at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

It was on the morning of his fourth Christmas, DJ JPQ’s life changed for all eternity, as he unwrapped BOTH a set of Little Tyke drums (a modest but noisy four piece kit), and a Fisher Price Tape deck. Now with the ability to pause and rewind his favourite tunes by Raffi, The Beach Boys and Fred Penner - and a little microphone to hype himself up - as well as a new sister to perform for, his DJ career had begun. The search for fire had begun in the young DJ’s mind’s ear, no LP, tape or CD would ever be safe again. Although, to this day he will still voice regrets that he didn’t make it as a drummer.

Years passed, as DJ JPQ graduated from the jolly jumper, to dancing in his diaper, to a childhood stint in the young company of Winnipeg’s School of Contemporary Dancers. The young DJ’s interpretation of Inspector Clousseau in a performance of Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther Theme” is still the stuff of WCD lore. However, that summer, a release from Paisley Park Studios in nearby Chanhassen Minnesota would alter his approach to music forever.
