Rotary International

The World Health Organization’s African region is officially certified free of wild poliovirus.

25/08/2020

Evan Burrell - Rotarian

In 1996, the great African leader Nelson Mandela launched the Kick Polio Out of Africa campaign with Rotary International’s support, setting out a vision for a polio-free Africa. At the time, wild polio paralysed 75,000 children each year. To protect communities from this crippling disease, African leaders, health workers, volunteers, parents, global donors and organizations united to reach every child with polio vaccines.

On 25 August 2020, after four years without a single case of wild polio, the African region has been certified free of wild poliovirus. Decades of extraordinary investment has paid off.

Yet, the job is not finished. These efforts must continue to prevent wild polio from returning and to end all forms of polio for good – both in Africa and globally.

I have a passion for sharing, talking and promoting Rotary. Telling our stories of who we are and what we do. I love to share with you my own personal adventures in the Rotary world and to create Rotary specific graphics to help you tell your own story. I do this without rewards or recognition because in my heart it just feels like the right thing to do. 😊

Happy womens day!
Today we celebrate and remember the strong and courageous 20, 000 women who marched to Pretoria against pass laws imposed on South African black women.
We also honour and acknowlege the greatness and strength of women today who lead, are visionary, as well as influential.

The longer these lockdowns go on, the harder it will be to replace the intangible community bonds we hold so dear. The support structures and the connections that can take years to develop and are vital for us as a people can become unravelled in months.

We are as all highly social beings that depend on each other and depend on our connections.

It is hard and it will only be harder after the pandemic if we do not come together to move forward towards a better, just and fair world.

We as Rotarians can lead the way.

Because we as Rotarians are leaders, and we as an organisation can move forward and bring people along with us.

This pandemic has shown that there is a silver lining and that opportunities do exist.

It is time now to reflect on our core projects and values and look at new ways and new markets in conjunction with membership, leadership and innovation.

Think about it, all it takes is our motto of People of Action!

In this crucial time the world needs inspiration and action and continued connection.

Because together we connect!

I'm of the belief that no matter who you are if you want to help then Rotary is for you.

Rotary clubs build communities, not barriers.
