This isn’t a music post but it’s important all the same.
If you have a couple minutes to read this it would mean a lot to me!
We live in a society that promotes the idea behind freedom while simultaneously eroding the value of it. We have more information at the tips of our fingers than ever before in known history, and yet instead of utilizing it and gaining the wisdom of all these different perspectives of the experience of life, many choose to live in a self-imposed echo chamber, turning a blind eye to anything that doesn’t directly align with their pre-existing beliefs.
This becomes harmful when people not only dwell in closed-mindedness, but try to control and mold the perspectives of others to fit their own. I’ve seen it happening all over the country lately, but recently it’s hitting close to home.
Not far from where I currently live there’s a Public Library which has been temporarily defunded and is in danger of a handful of books being banned.
A small amount of very vocal individuals are behind this, but if they succeed it has the potential to affect many lives in a negative way. They have the option to simply not visit the library, to not consume said material, and yet their fear of others having acess to these differing views is causing them to oppress.
Censorship of differing opinions / views is a major step on the road towards fascism, and book banning is an action more suitable to an authoritarian regime or religious cult than free-thinking body.
I’m leaving a link in the comments that has resources related to this particular issue for anyone who’s interested in preserving the freedom of knowledge, as it’s vital to the future of this country and those who inhabit it.
And please, if you hear of anything similar going on near you, do what you can to stand up for what is right. Each time we grant these oppressive fear-mongers a victory, it erodes the freedom that allows us all to evolve, explore, and be who we want to be.
