Inside The Shocking (Black) History Of Pilates - 21Ninety What Is Pilates? Pilates is a type of conditioning exercise that targets your entire body . It involves strengthening and toning the muscles, with an emphasis on the core. For example, popular socialite Lori Harvey credits the practice for her toned abs. ‘A bigger paycheck? I’d rather watch the sunset!’: is this the end of ambition? From high-flyers quitting their jobs to Beyoncé singing about work-life balance, people are recalibrating their lives and relationships to their jobs. What’s changed?
Over the last few months I've had the pleasure of mostly transitioning away from bedside nursing into a new role as a virtual critical care provider. Sometimes noted as an eRN, teleRN, or VCC (virtual critical care nurse), critical care nurses with at least 3-5 years of ICU experience specialize to monitor & manage virtually, along side bedside RN's & other members of the interdisciplinary team, the health of our most critical clientele. This technology consists of high quality computer monitors & equipment with two-way audio & video cameras mounted in each ICU room. While it has been noted that the shortage of intensivists nationwide, especially now during the pandemic, has widely exacerbated the challenges of overwhelmed, understaffed and often, undersupplied, ICU's across the nation, Tele-ICU allows 24/7 access to a team of intensivists & eRN's in a remote healthcare center which allow the benefits of using technology to predict patient trends & outcomes, thus resulting in prompt reduction in patient complications. It also allows the ability to run codes, order & interpret life saving test in real-time, and gives the ability to expand critical healthcare access to remote areas.
Making the switch from bedside nursing can be a real challenge for nurses who are used to having a more hands-on approach. For some, it may take several months to adjust to working in an office setting. Refining communication skills to deliver pertinent information to colleagues at the clinical setting is a must as it may be difficult to define boundaries & how far to intervene on behalf of the patient. In the reverse, a more positive outcome of working in eICU is the appreciation for reduced exposure to injury & illnesses resulting from direct bedside care & also the added ability to still be able to use years of curated critical thinking skills.
Healthcare & technology together, continue to offer innovative & flexible ways for patients to seek & recieve care. This shift in healthcare delivery offers healthcare professionals options to extend the length of their careers as well as to protect & preserve their own health, in turn greatly reducing the outcome of professional burnout.
Ready for the weekend.
Who's with me?! 😁
Today's Mantra:
I am letting go & welcoming change.
•••••••••••
Cheers to the first self-care Sunday of a brand spanking new year!
Needless to say, you don't have to wait until Sunday or even a New Year to re-evaluate areas where you can be more successful. However let me suggest that while you have the momentum, now is a perfect time to reflect on areas where you can let go of past challenges and welcome in new beginnings! While welcoming change can be scary it's no doubt necessary and allows room for both personal & professional growth. And while it looks different for so many, some examples of how to embrace change in your own life include:
•Practice grattitude
•Stay open to possibilities & new ideas
•Be creative
•Practice being comfortable in being uncomfortable
•Look for new ways to complete tasks
Learning how to embrace change in your life can assist you in becoming more mature, more confident, and overall happier. And there’s no better time to start your journey than today!
What are some ways that you practice letting go & welcome change into your own life?

Happy National Relaxation Day!
Today is a great day to be intentional about settling in & doing absolutely nothing. Give yourself whatever your body & mind needs to gain space to cultivate a calm & peaceful environment so that you can show up as your best & most authentic self. Rest with it!👳🏽♀️
What's your favorite way to cultivate peace & tranquility?
I love all my girlfriends & celebrating them too! August 1, is traditionally known as a day to celebrate national friendship, sisters, & girlfriends day. Who knew?!
By happenstance, I celebrated by having a fun & most relaxed weekend with one of my favorite sister-friends, .Feel free to check it out in my highlights! Hanging out with your girlfriends is a healing balm to your mental & physical bodies. These days more than ever, spending quality time with your sister(s)/friends, virtually or in person, is essential to maintaining emotional & physical equilibrium. Girlfriends, sisters, sister-friends, grant us a safe & supportive space to be our most authentic selves by supporting each other through both personal & professional challenges. Research proves that socializing greatly improves levels of happiness & positivity. It aids in dealing with stressors & calms your energy. Spending time with friends is a natural behavior that is not only relaxing but has been known to increase life expectancy.
So what's your favorite way to wind down with your girlfriends/sister crew? Did you happen to celebrate too? Let me know in the comments! 👇🏽

Sometimes it's necessary to pick up your peace & go missing.
When decisions need to be made it's considered quite normal to seek advice from external sources but how often do we seek advice from our inner-selves?
Before moving forward with any decision, try to take a few moments to quiet your environment & focus your mental chatter. Ask questions like: How does this decision benefit me? Is this the best decision now? Will this effect others? Are there other options available to me? Doing so ensures that your inner voice will always be there to guide you towards a path that's perfectly aligned for you.
A long drive, an early morning cup of tea/coffee, a silent walk in nature, gardening, meditation, & yoga are some of the ways I enjoy being quiet with myself.
How do you feel about going quiet? What ways do you practice listening to your inner voice?

"Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’ Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic?’ Vanity asks the question, ‘Is it popular?’ But, conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?’ And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because one’s conscience tells one that it is right."
-Michael King Jr.
There are few better questions to ask than "How can I love more?" This invites us the sincere opportunity to really look for ways to connect with others in more deep & meaningful ways. Often times that looks like being more present and generous with others, but it's also about being more present and intentional with yourself-even when it may feel a bit self indulgent.
When your world feels out of balance, take a few minutes to breathe deeply & to really check in with yourself. What is your conscience saying? How can you cultivate more love for yourself & for those around you? How can you make room for more peace in your life? What actions am I holding on to that don't serve my higher purpose/intention?
Today and always as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, look for ways to insert more love into your life as well as into the lives of others. And as your conscience contributions manifest themselves, you will start to see a beautiful new way in which your world engages.
How will you choose to love more today?

No matter how you choose to spend your holiday season, remember that self care is about giving the world what's best of you, not what's left of you. While gift giving brings joy to many, know that the greatest gift you can give to anyone is your full and complete self. This is your friendly reminder that in between safely celebrating the close of the year with friends, family, or even quietly at home-take the time to indulge in what makes your soul shine, cultivate what is uniquely you, live purposefully in your intentions, and be kind to yourself in all ways, always.
Have a very happy, restful & relaxed holiday season!

How do you develop an inner calm?
An effective way for me these days has been to be intentional about placing my attention on things that are already considered calm. That may include things like drinking a hot cup of tea, listening to soft relaxing music, focusing my attention on a fluffy white cloud or on a beautiful shifting tree in the wind, to admiring the bright glow of the moon as the stars shimmer all around...I can honestly say that in doing so, I've really grown to love being in nature even more!
Whichever way you choose to cultivate your inner calm, pay attention to what makes you feel at ease and choose to stay present there. You can find small moments of stillness anywhere if you look for it. Some may find it easier to develop this simple skill in quiet places, but with practice, it's also obtainable in places that may be a little busy or a tad bit noisy too. Focusing your mind on stillness provides your body to have access to rest no matter where you are. What a beautiful gift to give yourself!
I've really been bonding with my infinity yoga blocks over the past few weeks and besides the fact that they are environmentally friendly as well as esthetically pleasing, I also totally love how ergonomic they are for the body. 🙌🏽
After working long shifts, I tend to prefer to be more gentle with my workouts which is why restorative yoga is so, so beneficial! Restorative yoga is one variation of yoga that allows you to give your body a slower, deeper, more relaxed stretch with the support of props such as bolsters, pillows, straps, & blocks. Propper & consistent stretching are pretty important to recovery especially you've been shifting, turning, & adjusting patients for hours on end. are absolutely perfect for restorative practice as well as for those who may not be quite ready to show off those impressive flexibility skills just yet, (Me neither! 🤫). The sleek, modern, curves of these gorgeous lightweight yoga blocks, allow for more comfort for the hands & feet, thus also allowing for enhanced stability & spinal alignment. Long post but...yeah, definitely enjoying them so far!
Have you ever practiced yoga? What was that experience like for you?

Happy Veteran's day to all our military heroes past and present, who fought for and continue to fight for our freedoms, and to the families who lovingly support them. We thank you!

Shinrin-yoku, or "forest bath" as it's translated in Japanese, is the act of connecting to nature through our bodies senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste & touch. By connecting to our five senses we are able to effectively ground into the natural world. Grounding allows us to reduce & release stress, anxiety, depression & anger. It improves cardiovascular & metabolic health as well as increases focus, and aids in overall well-being.
No time for a forest retreat? No worries. You can literally shinrin-yoku in any natural environment. Your local park, botanical garden, backyard, beach, lake-any place will do!
Whatever your location, take a few moments to observe your surroundings-listen to the melodic chirping of the birds, observe the streams of light filtering through the trees, the fresh cool air on your face, or leaves swaying in the breeze. Most importantly, just let your mind & senses wander. Let go & explore!
Have you ever forest bathed? What ways are you releasing worries or thoughts that don't serve you today?

It's so easy to want to freak out about change. Not all change is bad, and not all change is easy, but change is inevitable. And while we can't always choose what changes happen to us, we can always change how we feel about it.
What I love about yoga is that it's a practice of both the mind and body to incorporate flexibility, stability, gratefulness, patience, & compassion into all areas of life. I have been out of my own yoga routine for maybe 2 weeks now & was really starting to feel a bit frustrated with not being able to find my flow again. Everything was feeling cumbersome & I wasn't feeling very flexible & then I remembered, this too is a journey. There will be days where you hit a pose perfectly & there will be days where you just topple completely over! And you know what? That's ok too.
As I stepped to the top of my mat I began to ground myself into both the comfort & practice again. What I absolutely love about this herbal dyed yoga mat are the hand-loomed ridges incorporated into the top & bottom, which aid in it being slip resistant & also feels like a little massage under my feet! And because of it's aromatherapeutic properities it is also antibacterial, antifungal, and aids in stress relief. When routines fall apart & changes fall into our lives, it's important to root ourselves in practices that keep one centered.
What practices do you incorporate that keep you on your own journey & allow more stability/flexibility in your life?
How does your day usually begin?
Are you an early riser or a late bloomer? Do you roll over, grab the phone and scroll through Instagram or instantly check updates on the latest news? If so, did you know that you are setting your mind & body up to be reactive, rather than getting yourself in a good healthy head space before you even begin your day? Guilty? Me too! Let's work together to break the pattern!
Benefits to starting your morning with ease allows you to feel calm and collected, rather than jolted and jittery. Getting a proper start to your morning will help keep you in focused perspective all day, so you can respond as your best self at whatever events that arise rather than becoming reactive to them.
So how do we begin to break the pattern? For me it begins by expressing gratitude for things as simple as having a restful night, or by reading a few pages from a new book before getting out of bed instead of text messages. It's setting an intention for the day or by streching and checking in with my body and doing my best to give it proper nutrition.
Are you intentional about living your best day? What routines do you have to start the day off right?
