How Genocide Impacts Women

Genocide is the commission of a prohibited act with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. Genocide is commonly misunderstood as mass killing, of which men are more likely to be victims. However, non-killing acts of genocide will more likely impact women and girls.

In the Chinese oppression of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims, women have suffered from forced abortions, sterilisations and the separation of their families. Women’s religious learning and gathering, prayer and wearing the hijab have all been explicitly criminalised. This breaks down female communities, friendships and support. These oppressive tactics have suppressed Uyghur’s traditional way of life and reduced birth rate.

Women, despite the discrimination they face, have also been some of the loudest voices demanding Uyghur Freedom. These activists include Zubeyre Shemsidin, Vice President of the World Uyghur Congress and Rushan Abbas, the founder of Campaign for Uyghurs.

This International Women’s Day, we highlight the unique experiences of female Uyghurs and amplify the voices calling for drastic action.
