"Don't you think that sometimes being an artist is like screaming into the abyss? Because you're not making something that people technically 'need'. Like, they need to go to the doctor or they need to pay their rent. So, sometimes, yeah, it just feels like you're screaming into the abyss. But, when it does resonate with someone, it makes it all worth it..."

"You have to be able to find that perfect balance of writing or creating to a certain point and being comfortable with putting it out there. You're always going to go back and critique your work. 'I could have done this better. I could have done that better.' I think all artists and creatives can attest to that; however, you learn each time you make a film or every time you make an album, or a painting. And I think it just makes your next set of work even better because you know what to do differently..."

"With being freelance, nothing is guaranteed. There's one guarantee in life: and that's that there are no guarantees. You never know if you're going to hit a dry spell. You have to be prepared, and you have to be willing to suffer. And that's scary. I've been through all those phases. It's scary at first, but once you know it's a possibility, you can plan for it and do the best you can to prepare."

"Your taste will always outrun your skillset and your artistic endeavors. You're going to always think that your own stuff is kind of bad because your taste is ahead of it. Sometimes it plateaus and it matches up, but then your taste gets better, and then you're in that whole upward momentum to try to reach your taste again. So, that's kind of what I try to remind myself..."

"Starting in 2009, I did something that was revolutionary to my career; I started trusting people. Trust is a double-edged sword. Because once you start handing things off to other people, they're either going to rise to the occasion and not disappoint you. Or they're going to disappoint you, and you got to do it anyway. Sometimes you gotta do it over. And it sucks. But, you gotta keep trusting people."

I think I have a little bit of a hack, and it's honestly just to put blinders on and go and keep making stuff. "My primary mission, as a teaching artist full-time who specializes in how I provide information to movers, is to empower. Especially young people to take up space unapologetically. I find that in the field of dance, I end up teaching a lot of younger women. And I think as a young woman, it's very hard to take up space and be okay with that and sit in that. It's something I grapple with... But I hope that dance can be a mechanism through which to empower that skill and learn and understand your relationship to yourself and others..."
