Trauma is not a choice. Unfortunately, many black women often suffer in silence due to fear of not being believed or supported by health professionals. Acknowledging the effects of trauma in black women will give others the courage to speak up and seek medical help for things like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more.

As Latinos make up an increasing share of the US population, it is imperative to raise awareness about the importance of knowing the health care priorities of Latino patients. According to the League of United Latin American Citizens, nearly one in five Latinos said that diabetes was the biggest health issue for them in their families. The second highest health concern was cancer.

Cultural and linguistic competency is important for the Latino community as it enables health care providers to better diagnose and treat patients with Latino heritage.

Health disparities result from multiple factors, including:

- Poverty
- Environmental threats
- Inadequate access to health care
- Individual and behavioral factors
- Educational inequalities

It's important to understand the major causes of health disparities among minority groups in America. Without knowing those causes, we can't address them, which means we won't be able to change the unfair situation people find themselves in.

Despite a large body of research demonstrating that health disparities affect the treatment and outcomes of medical patients, racism remains an uncomfortable topic for many healthcare professionals. Becoming educated on the experiences minorities have with health care is only one of many steps to understanding why we want to resolve this issue.

The Equal Health Care For All Act will authorize the Department of Justice To investigate and bring civil actions against health care providers with a pattern or practice of inequitable care, holding them responsible for ignorant actions that cannot be allowed when it is a matter of someone's health. It's National Sickle Cell Month!

According to the CDC, about 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait. Sickle cell disease is the most common type of an inherited blood disorder in the US. It is a chronic life-threatening disease that can cause episodes of severe pain, painful crisis, and organ damage.

Thanks to more advanced medical treatments and earlier detection methods, people with sickle cell disease are living longer than ever. Still, some 25 million adults in the United States must manage the pain of this chronic, life-threatening illness every day due to limited health care access.

Despite the increased use of nursing homes by minority residents, nursing home care remains highly segregated. Compared to whites, racial/ethnic minorities tend to be cared for in facilities with limited clinical and financial resources, low nurse staffing levels, and a relatively high number of care deficiency citations.

Although we know a great nursing facility can be a lifeline, our current system only leads our elders to further discrimination and exploitation––especially among seniors of color. We need to fix it. Find your representatives today!
