EP Review - Feculent - "The Grotesque Arena"
(Brilliant Emperor, Caligari Records)

Stampeding drums flood forth with double-kick pulses, destructive blast beats and slow smashing, crushing like a steamroller. Violent quickly picked, chunky and chugging riffs run up to select moments of rapid chord attacks, the splintering low-end harmonies being particularly nasty. Deep, bellowing growls vomit forth grotesque tales of horror, all as massive tempo changes churn the songs into a festering morass.

Devastating, fast riffs, pulverizing blasted drums and pit rising growls are the hallmarks of death metal. Moments of slowdown trudges see “The Grotesque Arena” pulled down into doom/death territory. Scant moments of burned tremolo chords from the sinister of extremes mix into the deadly death metal and become a lethal dosage of black/death, so barbaric in their fast delivery that they could be seen as connected to war metal. The significant tempo jumps draw a connection to death/grind. It’s up to you to decide how much genre mixing is going on to gain extra titles when figuring out exactly what’s being executed within “The Grotesque Arena”, one thing is absolutely certain however, is that this release fits perfectly within the world of death metal to any degree.

Prepare to be sickened as the world constructed on this release becomes “The Grotesque Arena”!
