Russell "Maroon" Shoatz has been granted a compassionate release by Judge Kai Scott, today, October 25th, 2021. 

Maroon has been imprisoned for over 49 years and now suffers rapidly deteriorating health due to stage 4 colorectal cancer. His condition is terminal, and now requires palliative care that involves parenteral nutrition through IV, which the PA DOC has neglected to provide. 

Effective immediately, Maroon will be transferred from SCI Dallas to emergency care at an outside hospital. They will evaluate his current state of health and provide the necessary assessments to begin home hospice care. 

This concludes a decades long campaign and is a major victory for the abolitionist movement. We are grateful for the diligent work of Maroon's family, the Abolitionist Law Center, Reed Smith, and countless friends and supporters.

Russell “Maroon” Shoatz is being hospitalized at an undisclosed outside hospital to receive specialized medical care that the PA DOC has neglected to provide. He was reporting severe abdominal pain and after numerous attempts from family members and his legal team, they were able to secure the agreement for emergency care. 

Maroon is suffering from “Stage 4” colorectal cancer with a terminal diagnosis. His cancer has continued to progress and his tumors have now caused a complete blockage of his digestive tract. He can no longer process food and has been moved onto parental nutrition through an IV. 

In August, his petition for medical transfer into home hospice was denied based on what Judge Kai Scott deemed undue "risk" from our wheelchair-bound 78-year-old dying elder. 

On Friday, October 22nd, Abolitionist Law Center refiled Maroon's petition, answering Judge Scott's arguments against his transfer to hospice and she has agreed to hear his case again on Monday, October 25th.

Maroon is transitioning from this life and we must ALL help restore him peace and dignity by bringing him home NOW! Please PRAY for him today and stay tuned for actions to follow...

These are all stopgaps that fail to address the underlying problem: New York, like the rest of the country, locks up far too many people for no good reason. Outgoing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo granted clemency Monday to David Gilbert, the father of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Gilbert is serving a 75-years-to-life sentence for his participation in the fatal robbery of a Brink’s armored truck in 1981.

On Thursday, August 12, 2021 Russell ‘Maroon’ Shoatz, a 77-year old Black Political Prisoner and grandfather with stage 4 cancer was denied medical transfer to hospice by a judge. The judge found that deferring Maroon’s sentence so he could live out his last days in hospice care created an undue risk of escape and a danger to the community, citing his 1970 and 1980 escapes from prison as reasons, despite his age, use of a wheelchair for mobility, recent decades of exemplary behavior in prison, and strong community support. Community members will be rallying outside Philadelphia’s Juanita Kidd Stout courthouse on Monday, August 16th at noon to bring attention to the judge’s recent decision to deny Maroon’s release. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks and all white attire for the rally.

MORE ABOUT MAROON & STATEMENTS FROM FAMILY, COALITION & LEGAL:

is a 78-year-old religiously devoted grandfather, beloved community member, mentor, and concerned citizen for human rights and the liberation of all oppressed people. He is serving multiple life sentences as a US-held political prisoner, including 22 years in solitary confinement.

He is currently wheelchair-bound, partially blind, suffering from Stage 4 terminal pancreatic cancer, and has survived COVID this past year, in spite of the DOC’s totally inadequate medical care.

Russell Maroon Shoatz, a 77-year-old political prisoner is suffering from stage 4 cancer. The DOC has canceled his scheduled chemotherapy treatments. Maroon is still very upset about this and the DOC has not rescheduled these life-saving treatments even after our aggressive phone, text and fax campaign last week.
