3D Printed Face Shields

In the response to COVID-19 essential services within the UK are struggling to obtain PPE for their employees due to global demand. As a result, a collection of volunteers across Tranent, Scotland have sourced and manufactured temporary face shields which aim to reduce the risk of our frontline workforce.

These are produced by our volunteers, funded through crowdfunding and supplied to front line workers who have no other PPE options available at this time.

Thank you to all our true heroes out there keeping the country running and tackling this virus head on, the country and all its population owe you!

Please note : since we started this campaign we have used 2 different shield designs, the final use remains the same, assembly is just slightly different, we have made this choice as the second model is more time and material efficient and enables us to increase how many we can produce.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

THESE FACE SHIELDS ARE NOT CERTIFIED PPE AND SHOULD NOT BE USED IN PLACE (INSTEAD OF) THE PROPER EQUIPMENT. THEIR INTENDED USE IS FOR ESSENTIAL SUPPORT WORKERS WHO HAVE NO OTHER OFFICIAL PPE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THEM, TO HELP REDUCE RISK.
DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON THESE SHIELDS TO PROTECT YOU, THEY ARE ONLY REDUCING RISK WHERE THEIR USE CANNOT BE AVOIDED.
PLEASE REFER TO THE MATERIALS LIST FOR INFORMATION ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE SHIELDS AND ENSURE THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT YOU WISH TO USE THEM IN.
COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE HOMES OF VOLUNTEERS, WE KEEP THEM AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE HOWEVER THEY ARE NOT STERILE OR DISINFECTED. PLEASE TAKE MEASURES TO CLEAN AND DISINFECT AS YOU REQUIRE AND REFER TO THE MATERIAL INFORMATION.
PLEASE KEEP THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN MIND AND DO NOT USE THIS PPE WHERE YOU ARE UNSURE.
Materials
There are three components to the face shield, the headband, shield and elastic cord (on the old model). To the best of our knowledge, the material composition of the components are listed below.
WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE ACCURACY OF THE MATERIALS DESCRIBED AS THEY ARE SOURCED FROM DIFFERENT SUPPLIERS. Please use caution if there are any concerns regarding the materials (i.e. allergies, or chemical incompatibility)
Headbands typically contain:
● (Coloured/Opaque) PLA – 3D Printed Polylactic Acid

Face shields typically contain:
● PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride Sheet
Cleaning and Sanitising
The shields will be made in as clean an environment as possible, although these are made in the homes of our volunteers.
THE SHIELDS ARE NOT STERILE NOR ARE THEY DISINFECTED AS PROVIDED. PLEASE TAKE MEASURE TO CLEAN AND SANITISE AS YOU REQUIRE.
For each of the components please note the following when cleaning and sanitising them prior to, during and following use.
Head band:
● 3D printed parts contain small ridges and should be considered porous by nature. Therefore, they can be difficult to ensure sanitisation at a microscopic level.
● PLA (Opaque/Coloured bands)
o Should have a good resistance to Isopropyl Alcohol
o Should have a moderate resistance to Ethanol
o Acetone is not recommended as this will have a severe effect on the material
o Should be disposed of in general waste, is not currently widely recyclable

● Compatibility information available here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326697946_Chemical_Compatibility_of_Fused_Filament_Fabrication-based_3-D_Printed_Components_with_Solutions_Commonly_Used_in_Semiconductor_Wet_Processing/
Face Shield:
● Made from PVC
● Should have a good resistance to alcohol cleaning agents (i.e. Isopropyl or Ethyl)
● Solvent cleaners are not recommended as they may have severe effect on the material
● Compatibility information available here: https://www.calpaclab.com/pvc-polyvinyl-chloride-chemical-compatibility-chart/
● Should be disposed of in general waste, is not currently widely recyclable.

Fundraising and Notes
These have been provided free to those who are in need. If you do however wish to make a donation so we can continue the effort, please consider our fundraiser :

We have raised far more than we ever imagined. We have used these funds to buy more printers, as well as all the supplies and equipment we need for this project. The printers will be donated, and any funds left at the end will be donated to local food banks. Thank you for supporting us.

Helping those in need

Help us Help the Frontline

PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR FRONT LINE SERVICES

Hi,

We are trying to raise funds to make 3D printed Face Shields.

The face shields are currently being given out FREE to hospitals, care homes , NHS trusts, nurses, doctors, carers, and in general anyone in the front line services that may be at risk of this COVID 19.

All the funds raised will go toward paying for materials , the cost to make these screens and if possible more 3D printers to make more faster ...
We have been swamped with people sending us good wishes and thanking us which is fantastic but our aim is to try to get as many as we can to support our local NURSES , CARERS, NHS Staff ,hospitals, postal workers, etc. as fast as we can.

Please donate what you can. It does not matter if its a fiver or a tenner. No amount is to small or to large . ALL WILL GO TO MAKING MORE and helping the front line services to protect all the people out there working for us while we stay at home ...

A little about me... I am a disabled army veteran with a 3D printer. My wonderful partner Sandra, who is deaf, saw a chance to help others and suggested we make as many as possible. If we can save even just one, life it would be fantastic. With your kindness and support we can reach so many more and help our community stay safe ...

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH
