It's a long post, but it's too good not to share...

I just returned from San Antonio, Texas, for the AONN+ convention (Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators), where I expanded my knowledge and could share my story with many of the nurses and navigators who attended the conference.

Here are some of the many highlights:

FAMILY: Despite our busy schedules, my beautiful sister was able to join me.

WELLNESS: We relaxed. Floated in the pool. Deers crossed our path during our daily nature walks. We moved our bodies with over 94,498 steps throughout the six days. Not one peach-colored sunrise or sunset was missed. We enjoyed the grounds of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa as the fog filtered through the Eucalyptus trees.

EDUCATION: I attended several informative classes centered around oncology: Integrative Cancer Care, Mindfulness & Compassion, Exercise Medicine and Moving, Navigating Mental Illness, Navigation Sustainability, and Pediatric Cancer, while feeling inspired by the brilliant Dara Kurtz, who was the keynote speaker. I brought a newly purchased journal to the conference. The clean white pages are now filled with scribbled notes and takeaways.

REALIZATIONS: I already have tremendous respect for nurses and navigators. However, after meeting so many of these passionate individuals from all over the United States face-to-face, I am completely blown away by them. They fight for funding. They develop new programs. They become the voice of their patients. They guide patients through the process. They provide comfort and understanding. They are compassionate, strong, and dedicated to their professions. I had the privilege to meet one oncology nurse who said that she helps over 1,200 patients a year. Twelve-hundred. She, along with so many others, creates a positive impact every single day. I was honored to be in their presence.

SAN ANTONIO: We had never been to San Antonio before and finally got to see the Alamo. During our stay, we connected with numerous friendly locals as they shared their life stories with us. The River Walk is a slice of heaven. I sipped sangria at 'The Pearl' before dinner. We watched the buildings diminish in size as we rode the elevator up the 750-foot-tall ‘Tower of the Americas’ to witness the sun drop below the horizon as the lights of the city sparkled down below.

LIFE IS ABOUT BALANCE.

It’s about integrating FAMILY, LOVE, WELLNESS, and EDUCATION while learning more about ourselves as life happens to us —> for us. It’s about being present in every single moment, with every single breath. Life is about showing up. To keep “growing,” we must keep “going,” even when we only have enough energy to take baby steps. We must accept new experiences in order to embrace them. Find gratitude and lessons in every situation, regardless of the experience or even the outcome. Every day is worth fighting for. Some days we wish we could climb back into bed, or they seem uneventful from predictable routines, but I guarantee that even during the worst days, good stuff— I mean, even amazing stuff— happens. Sometimes, we have to train ourselves to see it.

You got this. Grab life by the horns and embrace it all.
